Manual steering box

My ‘70 manual steering box has a significant amount of steering ‘slop’ in it. About 30degrees between before any steering action. It makes driving in a straight line tricky and leads to a sort of film driving technique.

Anyone had this and any pointers to try and trim/adjust this out? Or am I looking at a rebuild?

I had the same problem on my (power) '71. Have you checked your 'rag' joint, some of the play may be in a tired coupling ? Replacing mine improved matters quite a lot - see here. I've subsequently improved matters further by adjusting the steering box. If your box adjuster has some threads showing above the lock-nut you may still be able to eliminate some play.
