Hello from Glasgow

Hi guys,

Martin here. I currently drive a Golf R but I'm keen to move into Corvette ownership next year. I really like the C5 having been a passenger in one many years ago. My online research hasn't revealed a huge amount and I'm still concerned that I could buy a lemon and end up paying out a fortune on repairs.

I'm posting up here to hopefully learn as much as I can between now and the new year and with any luck, I'll buy a cherished low mileage example from someone on here!

Looking forward to speaking to you all.

Cheers,

Martin

Hello!

There's a huge amount of info on here, and a buying guide I'm sure someone will soon send you over! There's also the US forums, which have loads of info on too.

When buying mine I found there was probably less to worry about than a lot of other performance cars, but unfortunately you are sometimes limited by choice due to the rarity

Good luck with the search!

Hi Martin! Welcome.

I'm from Edinburgh but lived in Glasgow a year or so a while back. The Scottish presence on this club has been terrible for the 3.5 years I've had my C5. There's a good activity on Facebook on various groups though. The North East England guys are friendly too and do some meets near the border for shows and whatever!

I run highland drives, applecross etc., every year but they're not to do with the CCCUK.

Anyway, welcome. A C5 is such a brilliant car. It does seem that some are more prone to issues than others, but broadly speaking they're super reliable. I've driven mine hard for over 30k miles now and it's never once let me down. The only things that are expensive are oil changes and tyres! And aftermarket mods.

If you want to get a look round a slightly modified C5 in Edinburgh, get in touch.

Re: Hello from Glasgow

Try to get a 2001-up if you can but that is not critical. Check for signs of repairs both to the body and engine/trans/diff. The more original everything looks the better chance everything is working fine. Lower the mileage the better of course but again that is not a massive factor with these. The Yanks think they have a low mileage one if it only has 100K miles on it. Laughing

Electrical problems are the thing most people worry about and are the most common faults. But 90% are just down to bad earth connections or dirt in connectors.

You read a lot about faults on forums. But the people that don't have faults don't post about that so remember that on the whole these cars are pretty damn solid and reliable.

Good luck with the search. Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies and info guys, much appreciated.

I'd be aiming for a 2003 model onwards and I'd be looking for it to have less than 50k miles on the clock - I've been reassured by reading about the engine being pretty much bullet proof.

Shifty, thanks for the offer and I'd be keen to see your car and have a chat about ownership. Are you through in Glasgow much? If not, I'd happily pay you a visit some time.

Cheers,

Martin

I'm in Edinburgh 21st - 26th so if you happen to have time let me know and I'll do my best!

C5s really are great though. And also a great base for personalising. Out the box they're pretty solid but if you want it a little more track focused that's doable - if you want it more for long cruises it's already right for it, but there are good mods to improve it too. Obviously power desires are all reachable, people make ridiculous power with boosted Corvettes. Reliability woes can follow etc. A satisfying car to improve I think, more so even than my old JDM favourites.

Re: Hello from Glasgow

Thanks but I'll wait till I finish up for the summer and will pm you to see if you're around.

For me, condition would be paramount but I'd possibly wrap the car to make it really stand out. Ideally, I'd buy something enthusiast owned that I know has been cherished.

What sort of mpg is achievable in mixed driving? My Golf R estate achieves mid to low 20s day to day so I'm not adverse to poor economy but I'd use the car for my 20 minute commute, with my wife's trusty Sandero to transport the family lol.

Who do you use for servicing and any other work? There doesn't seem to be many American specialists in central Scotland from what I can see.

It would average better than this but mine was dragged to London for a while where it spent 3 months in first gear over speed bumps - and when it's in Scotland it's getting spirited driving only Very Happy on a long motorway run you'll see 35 easily, in 6th gear with a manual box car. I seldom use my car for this kind of driving so I'd say my average is below what a reasonable expected C5 average would be.

I do all my own servicing as a general rule. In terms of specialists, I believe there are a few. If you want I can find some names for you.

I fancy a satin pearl white wrap one day!

Re: Hello from Glasgow

Interesting and cool how you're able to chart the figures.

Hold off on the names front just now thanks - I'll do some more research as I'm a while away from buying just yet. Pearl white would suit the c5. My neighbour has a 'rust effect' wrap on his VW T5 which looks cracking and has withstood all that the Scottish weather has to throw at it so definitely worth considering. Thumbs up
