torque converter seal 1981 C3


Gradually working round the problems on my newly acquired 1981 C3.
Auto gearbox leaks fluid when parked etc. I am told this is a dried-out torque converter seal as the car has been stood for some years.I have further been advised this is a gearbox-out job and that if a new seal is to be fitted, there are various other items it is worth renewing whilst the box is out.
What in particular?

I'd say that the first thing you need to do is to actually see where the fluid is coming from.

Fully clean and dry the trans, then park it for a day. Inspect the trans to see where the fluid is getting out. We had a long term leak that I was convinced was the sump gasket, but was told a convertor seal was just as likely. But, when l we were able to have the car here at home, clean it, inspect etc. I discovered it was the shifter seal, a 10 minute job! And now, a dry transmission! It only leaked when the car had stood for a while, due to the convertor emptying over time and building "pressure" in the box.

Once you are certain, go from there. The reality is, there are a few places that fluid can escape and once it does, it gets everywhere!

Also check oil pump seal, it's inside! 2x engine out AND 2x torque seals replaced BEFORE I found out!
