Fusible Links

Hi all -

Long time, no post.

Had a strange electrical issue with my '76 recently, where I lost all electrical power during starting. All fine now, though...

Research/diagnosis suggested it could have been something "Fusible Link" related, but poking around and checking wiring somehow has somehow fixed the issue. All the other connections seem fine. I've done a lot of work around the front of the car this year, so it's possible I might have damaged something.

Tempted to replace all the fusible links, just in case. I don't know how it could work like this - surely they're either knackered or they aren't - but wondered if it could be some kind of intermittent/bad connection type fault, and whether I should just replace them all, just in case. They're 40 years old, after all.

Thoughts? If it is worth refreshing them all, any suggestions on what to use/buy and where from?

Ta,

Regards,
FJ

Basically, as far as I can tell, the fusible link is a short piece of smaller gauge wire than the main cable which will burn out before any damage is done to the main loom if a short circuit occurs, only way to fix them is to change them so they don't fail and then self heal, what you could have though is a break in a wire inside the insulation and moving the wiring has brought it back into contact, a hard one to track down. I had that once many years ago in the wire between the coil and distributor, car would run fine for weeks then just stop!
I believe they are still available in the US but I'm not aware of them being used over here, to replace them they need to be spliced into the harness in place of the failed one, they come in various ratings, if you do a search of the relevant forums I'm sure you'll find the details.
