1988 Headlamp door adhesive

This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time, about 15 years ago when I'd had my Vette only a few years, I put the headlights on at about 30mph and as the driver's side unit rotated the door flew off and I had to go back and retrieve it from the roadside (M1 - fortunately a slip road). The second time was today. After a great trip to Spain I discovered that the same headlight door had presumably detached itself on closing and was fortunately still underneath the lamp unit.
Anyway, what I need to find out is what adhesive I should use to re-stick the headlight door so that it doesn't come off again, if anybody knows. I also wonder if the other headlamp door has been living on borrowed time for the past 15-odd years, and how long the C4 constructors thought that the sticky stuff was supposed to last before failing.
The 'door' I'm referring to is the surface that's visible when the headlights are in the down, or off, position.
Help please!!

One of my covers was very wobbly when compared to the other. It wasn't till I changed my headlights I realised the mounting had broken off the underside...to fix I used aroldite(sorry for the spelling) the two tubes you mix together then you have a few minutes to apply it..seems to have worked well..one other mount was cracked so this got some as well.. and so far it's all held ok

I wasn't aware there were any glued items on the headlamp doors, is it a previous repair that failed? I think all the tabs are part of the original moulding.

Doors shouldn't be too hard to obtain, and should be peanuts. If you've got a broken one, might be worth calling the usual sources. Of course the extra motivator to repairing an existing one is that it is already the right colour for your car...

Your right fran the tabs are modded in as part of the flap but one had broken off taking a chunk of fibreglass material with it and another was cracked around Base of the tab . An easy repair and saves haveing an odd coloured door if you replace it

I had the same problem with my '88 about 3 years ago, as there was old glue on the cover I assumed that they were originally glued on. I didn't examine it too closely, maybe it was an old 'fix' gone wrong?

Used 'Evostick', not had a problem with it since.

Re: 1988 Headlamp door adhesive

From what I can see, the tabs are there to locate the door in the right position on the frame of the assembly, but the actual job of fixing does appear to have been down to the glue.
I want this fixed in a properly secure way, avoiding any possible repeat of the first separation incident (the latest was down to pure luck I'm sure and didn't occur at speed), so I've been to see my local expert who is going to use a PU adhesive next week on both doors.
I posted this same enquiry on the US Corvette forum and it's really surprised me that there's a lack of any definitive information - could it really just have been a bad batch/mix of glue back in 88?
Anyway, this is what's going to happen and I'm hoping that it will do the trick. If not, I may be back on here in another few years with an update. 🤔
