steering position sensor

I had the odd active handling error flash up, i have found the steering sensor shroud was hanging off, i have tried to push it back on but does not reach, it seems when i retract and extend the steering, the bearing above goes up and down with the column, is it a case of trying to push the bearing back into its sleeve? or am i misreading this?

Ok, I have managed a fix for this, i cut a section off my my hoover pipe, undone the nut and disconnected the column from the lower section, unclipped the sensor and pulled it off.
Then i put the hoover pipe section over the column up to the bearing, I then used a tiny
scissor jack between this and the floor, 4 turns and the bearing popped back in, the sensor went back perfectly, went for a drive all afternoon and not a peep from Mr Active Handling.
Only downside is i have disconnected the electric in / out switch for the column, I feel the bearing is too tight on the column sleeve and if I adjust the column in it will pull out again, no big deal for me

Re: steering position sensor

Glad you got it sorted. Don't fully understand the problem/solution without seeing it (?) Only thing I could see on YouTube that seemed most relevant, was this guy replacing the SPS on his C5 (?)

Re: steering position sensor

If you look at the pic, the bearing had pushed forward out of its shroud and popped open the steering sensor, i had to get the bearing pushed back in to be able to get the sensor back together and in place, the problem is the bearing has seized onto the column shaft and now cannot go back and forth through it, so if i lower my steering wheel again, the bearing will pop out again and im back to square one
Going to replace that section of shaft and bearing, at least i found the problem of why the active handling message kept appearing, with no secured bearing the column and sensor were bouncing all over the place
