Just found this in the 2002 service manual;

"When the coolant temperature is below 91C (195F), the thermostat valve remains closed. This prevents circulation of the coolant to the radiator and allows the engine to warm up quickly. After the coolant temperature reaches 91C (195F), the thermostat valve will open. The coolant is then allowed to circulate through the thermostat to the radiator where the engine heat is dissipated to the atmosphere. The thermostat also provides a restriction in the cooling system, even after it has opened. This restriction creates a pressure difference which prevents cavitation at the water pump and forces coolant to circulate through the engine block."

So my hand testing was spot on. Thumbs up

Just to put my two pennys worth in here....
I'm not sure what thermostat is in my 86, Ive never realy give it much thought but when cruising its normaly stable about 185f. when in traffic it will creep up to 218f when the fan cuts in, quickly bringing the temp down.
When I first got the car I did wire in a switch to manualy earth the relay to switch the fan on if needed but as yet ive never needed to use it. But its nice to know its there incase the fan switch goes faulty.
As I understand it these engines are designed to run hot and by keeping them cooler I would imagine they would not be running at max efficiency..

They run them hot for emissions reasons. Not for max power or efficiency.

That's why my mates 2012 Challenger in Denver makes more power at 180f. They have to make cars these days with tight emissions and fuel economy ratings.

I would rather make a bit more power than slightly less emissions.

If your car runs as cool as 185f then it's thermostat HAS to be rated around that figure as it is impossible for the engine to run below the rating of the thermostat. Once at the rated temp it closes and does not allow any cool water from the radiator to enter he engine. So your radiator water can be as cold as ice and it still will not effect the minimum engine temp.

If your temp rises much higher than the thermostat rating them the fans are not coming on until reaching that high temp. Then once they are on they cool the engine back down again as you experience.

It is better if the fans come on before temps get high. That way the engine temp becomes more consistent.
