Oil Testing Service? Message Icon


Hi all, this is my first proper post on the forum so be nice Smile

Yesterday when dipping my oil, I noticed some very faint white traces on the dip stick.
I immediately jacked up the car and drained some oil from the sump, half expecting to find a torrent of yoghurt. Much to my relief, the oil looks normal. However, when you let the oil streak down the sides of a container you can just make out some faint white streaks.

Obviously seeing white anything in my oil immediately makes me think blown head gasket, but the car is only a 2012 model with 24k miles, so it seems pretty unlikely to me that the head gasket could have failed so soon..

I was thinking it might be worth having an oil analysis done to determine if this is just some condensation from the cold winter weve had, or if this is more serious (i.e. glycol in the oil). Do any CCCUK members have experience with an oil testing service in the UK?

Have you actually observed loss of coolant?
How long since the engine was run?. Did the engine and all liquids get the chance to heat through thoroughly on the last run? Have you done an oil change since you've had the car?

Tony being a cabbie will remember (before the days of electric fans operated by a vehicle ecu) seeing many black cabs in winter with a piece of alloy or plywood blocking half the radiator grille - same with trucks. This would made sure the engine would be running at a higher temperature to avoid oil contamination (and made the inadequate heaters work better) - a hot running (but not overheating) engine is always more efficient in all respects. And never run without a thermostat.

2012 and 24k miles... That's the problem right there. Yes

Why not just use the car and get it hot to burn off all the moisture out of the oil, brake fluid, trans fluid and the electrical connections etc.. It'll do it the world of good.

These cars are not meant to be pampered, they are seriously robust performance cars that like to be used, so why not just enjoy it instead of keeping it nice for the next owner. So what if it gets dirty and salty, that's why God gave us the jetwash!

Thanks guys.

First of all to answer roscobbc questions - I last flushed out the coolant about 5 months back and haven't touched it since. Looking now, I'd say the level in the expansion tank has dropped about 7mm from the max cold mark. I honestly can't say over how long it has taken to drop, as I've only glanced at the tank to check there was fluid in there, not checked in detail until now.

The last run I made was the previous week. Drove about 100 miles, where the oil temp definitely had the chance to get up ~230F.

Last oil change was ~1,200 miles ago in December. However, I did put in some Royal Purple HPS, which is technically not a GM spec. compliant oil. I'm wondering if, because this is a 'racing' oriented oil, that it could be more prone to moisture absorption than conventional 5w-30..? Scratchchin

As Vetteheadtony says, this could just be some winter humidity...
Either way, do you reckon I should get the oil tested for glycol before firing her up again?

Royal Purple is just a full synth with a molecular additive like Actv8 or ZX1. Good stuff and as its a full synthetic, it doesn't need changing for a long time. I use Mobil 1 with Activ8 and change it every two years or 20k miles.

If it were mine, I'd be getting in some serious miles on it and at a fair lick too and just keep an eye on the gauges. If there's a problem, you'll know it soon enough..

Thanks very much Allen, Ill be sure to take note of their details.

So after a couple days of letting her sit and doing a few odd jobs, I decided to take her out for a drive. Pulling over and checking the oil every few minutes, I'm somewhat embarrassed, but relieved to say that all appears well and there are no longer any traces of white in the oil.

As you guys speculated, the white streaks must have been a result of condensation from the cold weather weve been having. Having never used Royal Purple before (especially with it being a deep purple hue) it must be characteristic of the oil to show up any minute traces of water that are present, which would probably go unnoticed in a brown/golden coloured oil. Doh

Anyway, thanks a lot for all of your feedback. Apologies for the run-around!
