Did the Easter meet Friday to Monday each year from '75 to '80. It would be frosty in the morning but hot for the rest of the day.

Still got my Sammy Miller tee shirt (302mph in 4.2sec) and a cassette with all the sounds of the '79 meet (Pete Crane in Stormbringer running the first 5 sec run at 5.96sec.)

I heard about Pete Crane's first sub-6 second run on a Radio One news bulletin.

As far as I know Sammy Millers first +300 mph run in Europe was at Santa Pod in July 1979 at 307.6 mph. I think he had run quicker than that in the USA before which is why he couldn't run there any more.

I didn't see him for the first time until September that year. Then at the Fireworks meet the same year the car flipped in the air at half track and was badly damaged. I can't remember how badly he was hurt because I wasn't there.

He was back running in 1980 though because I saw him in September again that year.

From 1982-86 I was there at most of the big meets so was there in 1984 to witness his record breaking 3.58 sec. run which I think still stands as the quickest ever full quarter mile pass EVER.

I was also there when he blew the windows out of the track tower gantry. Very Happy

I have commentated (badly) from the Gantry myself at one time and been in there hanging onto the gear a few years ago when the regular Jet car runs. The whole gantry sways. When they pop the afterburner a few times before launch it is like someone slapping you HARD on the soles of your feet through the wooden floor. Quite an experience.

Your right, I had to raid my motoring memorabilia in the loft to find the tee shirt and it is 307.6mph..

Always wondered what it would have ben like in the gantry when the racing (especially Top Fuel/Funnycar) and was on and Brian Taylor was commentating.
