I constantly scope ebay for new 16" tyres that I can store for my '87. I already have a pair of Cooper 295/50x16's at 60 each, a pair of Nexen 245/50x16's and just picked up a pair of XP2000 275/55x16 for 150.

Problem with the early C4 is that it can look a bit ungainly at the rear with narrow tyres, that's why I like oversize tyres on the back. The 295's don't rub or stick out and fit perfectly on a 9.5"rim. From the back, my '87 looks almost like a red Mantaray beach buggy, almost cartoon like, which is how I like it.

New 16" tyres can be had, it just takes a lot of looking. I don't bother with Northants, as they are extortionately priced.

Thanks everyone for your comments so far - it is very much appreciated in helping me make up my mind. I think I'm still more swayed to the 17 inch at the moment.

Thanks for these details, that was what I was thinking about with better UK tyre availability. Maybe not quite so fussed about speed rating, but I'm definitely interested in wet weather performance etc. I do want a nice "confident" tyre, despite me not going to drive it fast or do hard cornering etc - but I know good tyres do reduce braking distance, which is what I am interested in. (No, I'm not a tailgater or such, just appreciate good tyres for braking).

I have done alloy size increases with other cars in the past and can appreciate the difference in the ride the smaller profile tyres make. It doesn't bother me. I have to ask - will we actually hear tyre noise over the sound of our V8s? My 68 has side pipes and I can't hear a thing when driving other than them (which is what I like Very Happy )

Mostly the change to alloys is for cosmetic purposes, but if I can get good quality UK tyres and better braking etc, then that's even better. Very Happy

Don't hear the tyre noise over the exhaust sound - Tyres are Toyo's, so not UK made (few are) wet weather traction is good - probably need to be careful of aquaplaning - grip is superb. You'll see on my signature the power my engine is making - unless the road is greasy or damp these handle the power very well.
