Spare tyre


Hi All
Continuing with the thread on tyres, I have moved onto the spare. My spare is basically a piece of bald rubber attached to a pile of rust.

The rime has an OD of 16 inches, and is 6 inches wide, and I intend to have it blasted.

The only marks on the tyre are Remould, and 6 : 40 : 15 which does not mean a lot to me.

Can anybody advise on the size of space saver I need. I presume the normal tyres (deflated) will not fit.

Also has any body tried the sealer and pump kits?

I replaced the spare on mine last year. It had never been used but after nearly 40 years I assumed it wouldn't be safe.

My local tyre place found me a van tyre the same size - fits under the car perfectly fully inflated.

195R15 Autogrip Vanmax 106/104R 75 with valve and balanced

Are you sure your diameter is 16"? You say the old tyre was 6 : 40 : 15

Does the 15 refer to the diameter?

Rim for 15" tyre will measure diameter of sealing surface - 16" will probably be across total wheel diameter?

The 16 inch measurement is the outside diameter from rim to rim.
Thanks for the info for a space saver.

I am still toying with the idea of having a sealing kit and pump, because I can then also fit my jump pack into the same space.

Ross is correct. 16 inch across = 15 tyre size

I would have thought a deflated tyre takes up much the same room as an inflated one.
Your jump pack could fit in the hollow of the wheel perhaps?

I have OKO tyre sealant in all my tyres but would advise carrying a compressor to top up as when I removed the large screw from a tyre on my golf I had to keep topping it up for a week or so until it finally sealed but it was a large screw!

Good idea to change the spare, mine all looks good even had the wheel yellow powder coated, never gave a thought to the 40 year old rubber - start of a new list.

Tyre sealant only works for small holes like a screw or a nail, which would be a slow puncture anyway.

If you have an instant blowout with max deflation the silicone will not seal it - ask me how I know.
