How Mechanically Similar Or Different Is A C4 Corvette To A European Car? Message Icon


So I want to know if I was to buy a C4 and somewhere down the line something goes wrong mechanically speaking. Would a decent mechanic be able to work on a Corvette. For instance, my mechanic has carried out several jobs on my BMW E31, and also repairs and tunes old rally cars like Ford Escorts and the like. So I would consider him a competent mechanic.
Or would it be a more of a specialist thing for someone who repairs American cars.

I'm just trying to cover all angles before I decide to make a move. Very Happy

Theres nothing on a c4 that's very technical...Any competent mechanic could work on them if they chose to do so...Only downside is parts are not off the shelf so will have to be ordered...But service parts are readily available from both here n abroad.so not an issue

In my opinion I would try and go for a 92 onwards if you can to get the LT1 engine, more power, smoother suspension and just a all round nicer model.
Only problems I have had and a well documented Achilles heel are the Optispark distributor, around £100 and a few hours with basic hand tools.
Apart from that itís just a normal car with normal nuts & bolts!
Get most of my parts from www.rockauto.com cheap and to my door within the week normally.

My mechanic usually works on classic minis and has an E30 fast road car. He has no problem working on my 89 C4. Likewise I tend to get parts from Rockauto. If I'm giving him a big job I go belts & braces and order all the sundries, just incase something in there breaks or is worth changing at the same time too. That way he won't have to wait for extra parts to arrive.

I am leaning more towards the LT1 version even with the Optispark problem.

Not the worst problem, once youíve fitted one chances are youíre never need to fit another while you own the car, LT1s are a really good strong engine and enough power to feel very capable.

In my experience the main difference is that all the parts are heavier and easier to work on than European cars of the same age and the older the Yank car the less likely you will find anything metric on it.
