Most people seem to decide on a specific cam (and invariable far too wild for their application) then think to themselves - you can't have too much of a 'good thing' and go for an even wilder cam, wondering why the thing is gutless under 3000 rpm (but sounds good) and with only another couple of thousand revs above that they give themselves a virtually un-drivable car...............Had a buddy running a cam with a 265 degree cam @ .050" inlet in 289 cu in Mustang. He had to drop the rear end to a 3.89 or similar and install a 5 speed to get the thing to even pull away from standstill - in the end he had to install self learning fuel injection to even stand a chance of usability - sounded nice though!

People don't realise that everything has to match all the way through the engine and back to the rear wheels and suspension for the car to work as a complete package. Just bolting on parts can take away in some areas to get an improvement in "peak" HP (or torque in reality).

Head flow is critical. More is not better. Heads work best when flowing just enough for the cam and RPM in order to maintain a good air velocity. Then the intake flow has to match. Exhaust flow too. Cam timing effects cylinder pressure. Static compression ratio has to match that. Clutch needs to be stronger. Or a torque converter will need a higher stall speed to stop the idle rpm to pull down low when put in gear and give the correct torque multiplication. The rear gears need to match the engine operating rpm range. Getting the power to the ground often needs suspension modifications.

If it was that easy to make a good car "great" every Tom, Dick and Harry would have a great car.

similar mods it should be around 640 at the flywheel.

The heads and cam came from AHP as a proven package that is actually very drivable.
I have driven at 50 mph in 6th at just over 1k rpm and theres no bucking etc.
I think a bigger cam would be problematic with driveability.

If the weather holds off for the drag racing, taking place at "Newcastle's Hurricane Raceway" in October, do you and Dave Turnbull not fancy having a race up the airstrip?

Very nice. What are your mods? Is it on an ls2?

They are on an LS7.
Mods if I can remember,

AHP package 4 heads with powdered metal guides, PSI 1511 springs,
hollow Ferrea exhaust valves, tumble polished OEM intakes, titanium
retainers, milled 0.030" with "street porting".
Hardened pushrods, dont know size, had three different sizes
due to milling.
Gaskets, spark plugs and leads are in the heads fitting package.
The cam is AHPs 116 Cali cam, and comes with all gaskets and
new OEM lifters.
Changed air filter to an AFE stage 2 CAI.
I also previously had an ATI 10% underdrive pulley fitted as mine had
fallen off.
Had a Monster stage 2 clutch waiting to be put in for a while before,
with a new Tick master cylinder and a new OEM slave with a billet
bearing support fitted.
Have a Borla Stinger 11 over axle exhaust and an MGW short shifter
to finish.

Phew.....

There is an organisation called "Straighliners" that do 1/4 mile Drag, Drift and Timed Mile events on old airstrips all over the UK.

They are going to start events at what used to be called RAF Ouston which is just to the north of the A69 half way between Newcastle and Corbridge. They did the Fastlane show there a few years ago?


They are going to call it Hurricane Raceway and HOPEFULLY (fingers crossed) we could have regular (ish) Drag Racing there. It was going to start at the end of next month but it has been put back a couple of weeks now to something like the 13th/14th October?


Anyway. I am dead keen on supporting anything they put on there. Only a half hour's drive for me.
