Shifty's Corvette C5 - Updates, fettles and road trips!

Back again!

As ever, fettling + fiddling and going for drives in the Vette these last weeks + weekends.

Started with a week off work week before last - doing up the garage, ripping it all out and painting the brick walls. It's made it so much lighter.

Image

Hanging stuff on the walls, building a bike rack, and generally tidying has made it much, much easier to get a 4.6m long, 1.9m wide Corvette in - and still have (some) space to work with

I have to say this has been an incredibly satisfying project!

Interplanetary forces aligned - and the same week, the DVLA got their arse in gear, a fancy bracket arrived from Sugarland, Texas, and my numberplates arrived. Cue the music:

A regular 12x6 on the back

But a fancy fold-down on the front, to allow me to re-fit the super aggressive trademark nosecone

Love it!

And with that - a week of work... Before a weekend of fun!

Went a drive with two friends from my previous car 'scene' - in a very, very quick MR2 turbo from the Japanese 90s. This served as an excellent opportunity to test out the new short-shift kit I'd bought and fitted, but did come just a little too early for me to break in the exhaust I've plumped for. Details to come...

Our route took us from Glasgow through Paisley, then up the A82 along Loch Lomond. Take the turn off for Garelochhead along the absolutely superb 'old military road' (one of many by that name I think) - a personal favourite - before continuing along to Arrochar and then the Rest & Be Thankful stop:

With that - the run continued to Inveraray, where we had (for the second time - never again!!) the worst fish and chips in Scotland. Sigh. It's just as well the roads are so good!

So - onward to Crianlarich. After a stop to take the roof off:

And from there, home, back down the A82. An excellent run.

But not complete without a stop in Paisley again - to meet with a fellow 'Vette owner and petrolhead Willie! A fantastic C3 and some great accompanying metalwork in the form of Audi and Seat.

I was really stopping to gratefully take ownership of an old bit of carpet - from his garage to mine. No pictures of that needed though, I don't think... Thanks again Willie.

Perhaps I'll just keep topping up this thread from now on, instead of starting new ones all the time!!

Since those last images, I've bought and fitted a new exhaust - the Mid America Quad Power system:

On the car:

And a video of it on the rolling road - just for kicks:

After that, there was the Thirlestane Castle meet - a fantastic event, with some great photos taken too - in the thread in the 'Non-CCCUK Events' forum.

And since then, I've finished my brake caliper paint job (thinking about painting the flags on the wheels now... Hmmm:

Discs, pads and fluid to be done this week. Also just back from the 500-mile Applecross trip (about 15 hours in one day?) - hopefully some great photos and video footage of that to come.

Long live the Vette, I'm still in the honeymoon period!

Bet that exhaust makes the car sound "more healthy". Yes

So, going back a hundred years or so..... Ok, I'm exaggerating, when you started the caliper saga where was the 'oil leak' from? How was that fettled?

I've been keeping an eye on the oil level and have no less than 11 litres of Mobil1 in my garage ready for oil changes and top ups - but the level doesn't seem to have dropped. I don't understand it.

The car does seem to run out of windscreen washer fluid quite often, but I cannot believe that's what I saw.

That said - no one, including me, has ever noticed oil on the ground under the car. Not after a thrashing, or just a doddle to the shops, or after sitting up for a few days. The mystery goes on.

Looks like water to me.

It didn't smell of anything, and didn't feel viscous between fingers, but I stopped short of tasting it.

I have read about it of course and heard that oil in this location can be the oil pressure sender at the rear of the intake. I continue cautiously... But appreciate some advice as usual.

Isn't the AC condenser above there?
