Stock thermostat opening temp

You would think it would be easy to find out what the stock opening temp of my 2002 C5 is wouldn't you but the internet is only full of arguments about 160 and 180 degree versions.

I am guessing mine opens around 195 degrees because it normally sits at around that temp?

Re: Stock thermostat opening temp

My thermostat is a 160deg unit, but the car runs about 180-185 on a hot day on the motorway (the fan is set to come on at 170).

The opening temp is usually a bit lower than the running temp.

Re: Stock thermostat opening temp

Thermostats set the MINIMUM engine temp and have no effect on max temps.

Something people fail to grasp most of the time.

I just want to know what the stock rating is.

If a cooling system is efficient enough the engine temp will never go much higher than the thermostat temp and settle back down quickly. However most systems deliberately only switch the radiator fans on at a higher temp. Sometimes in two stages.

I have a basic Diablo tune on my car. It is unclear to me if that tune program has altered the point the fans kick in or not as some do.

I just want to work out how the system is currently working. But to do that I need to be certain what temperature the current thermostat is opening. Then I can decide if I want to make some changes to that.

I would put a 180F thermostat in your engine. That way it will warm up quicker without effecting running temps. Thumbs up

I have had my 2001 C5 since new. It came with a 180F thermostat which it still has after 152,000 miles

I THINK I read somewhere, because I was looking for it, that the stock temp for the fan activation is 210f or 220f

Mine are definitely coming on at a lower temp than that.

Standard thermo can't be 180 because all the yanks talk about is swapping to a 180 and re-programming the fans to come on sooner.

That does not make a whole lot of sense to me, why would you increase the time it takes for the coolant to start circulating the block and bring in the fans earlier? Anyway my 2001 user manual says 186.8F; I always thought it was 180, a figure I have certainly seen elsewhere on the forums. It sure is not 160. Your 2002 user manual will have the figure at the back in the specifications section

Now maybe because they have deserts the domestic C5 is setup differently on cooling than export models?? never seen anything on that but then have never been looking.

Oh saw something just now that suggests fan activation is 220, which is what I though it was but was not certain.

Re: Stock thermostat opening temp

I have seen some replacements for sale labelled at 187F. So that makes sense.

I have looked in a user manual for a 2002 but didn't find a thermostat spec. I will look again.

I don't want to start trying to explain how a cooling system works. Just humour me.
