Electric Question


OK Vette rarely used, can leave it for 4 or 5 months without use, (Battery Kill Switch off) - Vette always starts no problem.

Had a 5 mile drive 2 weeks ago no problem.

Monday night got it out to wash it, Kill Switch on - Elec Fans came on straight away - hardly any Battery Juice, I always wang it round before starting to get the oil circulating, gave it a boost charge for 10 mins - started fine - washed it, put it back.

I knew it needed a longer charge, it had never played up before but looking at the records the Battery was 7 years old.

So got the new Battery yesterday and installed it tonight (I did not emery the Terminals before connecting)

So here is the issue: Kill Swich on, immobilizer set - turn the Key "Click" and again "Click" so I sat there thinking .......... re-connect it with "Brillowed" Posts or there is another issue eg the connection at the Starter Motor, just about to get out and re-connect, tried it again - burst into life - tried it 3 times all fine - so why the Click after first re-connecting?

Older cars to seem to their own individual quirks and characteristics - mine for example for the first 12 years of ownership had a recurring power steering leak which deposited fluid all over the garage floor every winter - then for no reason it stopped and for the last 3 or 4 years has been OK........ silly

Could be a poor connection to starter connections can get corroded over time . Clicking would say power to solenoid on starter but not power to the main motor post it could also be a bad earth on engine to chassis or even poor earthing of starter on engine as well as the obvious just bad starter motor bit of terminal cleaning would be my starting point Barry

Barry

Sounds like a "dodgy" connection somewhere that needed a bit of "juice" to "clean" it. Maybe a look at the earth straps etc? Plus, re-check the battery connections - I've had occasions where a clean and re-fit solves the problem.

Yes - in the same way as I know when to top-up the engine oil.......when the oil pressure gauge momentarily shows zero (or oil pressure warning light flashes) if 'earholing' around corners Clap

That is what I was looking for, I just was not sure if the Battery connections / Posts were oxidized and hence partially insulated and could cause the initial problem of isolating the power, hence I mentioned that I had not "Brillowed" the Posts.

I will redo the Battery connections and give them a good rub down first, and check the earth straps and as Brett of Custom Exotics said I need to go through the complete system and check all the connections to the chassis and Starter Motor / Solenoid.

If you have any more problems with the battery not starting the car don't forget you can always use the starting handle. Goes in the front somewhere. Thumbs up

Sounds like a starter solenoid not fully engaging.
Might do it again might not, know where my bet is though.

This is obviously a "Wind Up"

Phil, I know it "goes in the front somewhere" and when you move it, the car goes - but mine is called a gear stick - I am not sure if it is your age, or you are just getting "Cranky"
