Query on C5 TPM sensor nut torque setting


Hi, I am about to renew the TPM sensors on my Export MY2001. Now last night I saw this in the FSM…
For Domestic vehicles tighten the nut to 35 lb in
For Export vehicles tighten the nut to 106 lb in

Yes, that is 35 vs 106. Searching around the major suppliers I see no such differentiation in the nut used nor the grommet. I assume the valve stem size and thread are the same for Domestic/Export. My assumption had been that the difference between the two parts was just the radio frequency used.

So why is the torque setting different, let alone by so much, anyone know? I am assuming I will need to give a torque setting to the guys in the tire shop – maybe I just say tight!


Also does anyone know if the sensors changed from C5 to C6? I have three sensors with shiny alloy valve stems, as per the originals on my C5, but the fourth has a black stem.

Did the sensor change from the C5 to the C6? My quick guess would be "Yes." That's on the basis that you could program/activate the sensors using a magnet on the C5 (so I have read), but need a scan tool to activate C6 sensors.

Suspect if you look on the RockAuto website, you will find they are different part numbers?

Yes c5 and c6 are completely different.

Plus on the C5 (as with anything to do with radio frequencies) you have USA frequency systems and Euro frequency systems. Same as the key fobs.

You should be able to find the part numbers concerned via a search on here as I know it has been discussed in detail at some point.

Thanks guys; yes a magnet is used for registering the C5 sensors. There is a thread somewhere on the part nos. but I already have the sensors so not an issue. I think I will go with then more laid back approach and then if it leaks just tighten it some more!

It's just a rubber plug on the bottom of the stem filling the hole in the wheel. It does not need to be very tight to seal. Once you have air pressure in the tyre it holds it in place anyway.

I took the nuts off mine to polish them with no loss of pressure from the tyre.

On a more serious note, here's what GM has to say about TPMS sensor torque for the C6

GM torque specification for valve cores is 4 in lb (0.45 Nm)

Valve stem nut torque 62 inch-lbs (7 Nm)

The rubber grommet on the C5 sensor is a better seal than the C6 version by the looks of it.

The C5 one is rounder and a tight push fit in the hole.

I have chrome wheels and the nuts were black with dirt and corrosion plus black caps.
So I bought a set of alloy caps and polished those as well as the nuts so they blend into the wheel better.

Details indeed, until those alloy caps get stuck. The first job I did on my 2001 after collecting it from the showroom was to replace those caps with black plastic ones; which of course match the tyres giving a pleasant overall harmonious look. Thumbs up
