Re: European Drag Racing - Santa Pod Raceway

Ah when I was young and single me and a couple of lads used to go to the big events twice a year at least. Sometimes spontaneously if we were having a boring Friday night. Just used to jump in me old Chrysler Charger and drive the 235 miles through the night to get there Saturday morning. Yes Sometimes with a tent. Sometimes just sleeping in the car or if there was a party on at any local lasses house when parents were away we all piled on the parents bed. Thumbs up

Lucky if I can afford the one weekend a year at the Mopar Nats now and would rather have an early night in a hotel room these days. Rolling Eyes Very Happy

I bet a few parents of nice girls in the Wellingborough area sleep easier now that you're a bit older Dave Rofl

Me and my best mate were snogging two lasses (shirts up) against the back wall of a pub in Rushden not far from SPR once when we suddenly had the father of one of them behind us ordering his daughter to get in the car NOW! Doh

We didn't see either of those two girls around again after that for some reason. Skep

If only I had been given that advice 45 years ago.

Daren't try it now because my knees stop me running very fast if the lady takes offence!

Doh

That'll be the Compasses then?

We were regulars at the Easter nats and Summer events. We (six of us in a hired van) spent so much in that pub that we used to get Xmas cards off the owner and his wife. "..her Scots lads" she called us.

The pub was well used for us to have a wash and dump (as the SPR facilities were spectacularly bad!), then and fish and chips at the chippy up the road and back to the pub for more beer. Great times!

I bet you know my mate Alan Niven (Ram Air Mk4 GTO) who bought Dodge Fever (Super Bee)

Re: European Drag Racing - Santa Pod Raceway

One time in the 70's I went to the pub in or near Poddington. Can't remember the name or what it was like.

No in the '80s we used to always go to The Wheatsheaf Hotel on the High street in Rushden. It was a "Biker" and "Hippy" bar. Rock music and Rock Chicks. Sometimes at the Winternationals you got groups or German and Scandinavian Drag fans in there too.

Toilet seat optional sort of place. Quite "lively" at times. Although I only got involved in a fight the once and the manager made us and a bunch of local bikers sit in opposite ends of the bar.

I have some fond memories of the place and some of the parties we were invited (I think?) to.

Broke my heart when in the early 90s I went there with another mate and the place had turned into a boring quiet bar with flock wallpaper, posh carpet, rubbish beer, and fake brass antique fittings, no juke box and the other bars in the area were full of underage baseball-cap yobs with loud "House" music. I asked around and there was not one place for miles for live bands or rock music. Damn shame. Sad

Re: European Drag Racing - Santa Pod Raceway

The Compasses was a great pub, hard chairs, great ale, no hassles and friendly locals..

The only ruck we got into was in the campsite once when a bunch from the NE blocked in our van and couldn't be *rs*d moving to let us out to the pub. No amount of pleasant requesting would get them to shift it so we did it for them by reversing our van into theirs which didn't go down well and things got physical until my mate belted one of them with a jack handle after he saw (so he said) a knife being pulled, and that brought us all to our senses.. We were good mates after that and even shuttled them to the pub with us (Easter Friday-Monday).

The Easter meets were always good and I always came back with a farmers tan.. Never bothered to dress up for that event, we all wore overalls!
