Beautiful E-Car

The Concept Zero study made its debut last September at the Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest, held at the Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. During the fastidious restoration of a 1968 Series 1.5 E-type using factory practices and tools, the original 4.2-liter XK inline-six engine and its four-speed manual transmission were removed and placed in storage. A box conspicuously labeled XK330-4, containing a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, now resides prominently under this E-type’s hood. A new 220-kW (295-hp) AC electric motor and gear reduction unit fits in place of the original manual transmission. The E-type’s final-drive differential, suspension components, and disc brakes required no modification. The space originally devoted to the gasoline tank now houses various electronic control components, some of which came from the new I-PACE.

Re: Beautiful E-Car

William Lyons must be turning in his grave! The whole point of an E Type (that would be XKE in the US) is the engine.

Sorry, a disaster in my book. Smile

As a pioneer of his day he may well have been leading this new technology?

Petrol Hedonism is about a bang - an explosive charge creating movement and a symphony of sound which is music to all those that have fuel in their veins.

Long live the petrol engine with all it's technological advancements.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that in older cars of this vintage the manual version is generally the quicker and more desirable version? (baring disability and driving preferences etc)

Therefore, why didn't they use an automatic E-Type to electrify? As effectively the car would still remain automatic as the electric version presumably only has one gear? Then could have kept the standard automatic interior to make it look standard, but powered by electric.

Auto boxes as we know them don't work with electric conversions. Jaguar are actually buying and converting E-types themselves.

Electric vehicles are the way forward, what would you rather drive, ..a Leaf or an old electric Corvette? This is not going to go away no matter how far we stick our heads in the sand. Embrace the soon to come changes and enjoy it..

The only petrolhead winners will be those with 'Historic' ticketed vehicles so if you want one, buy now before prices rise..

Unfortunately, that sort of mis-informed fatalism that has got us into the situation we are in!

A reent study by universities in the US and, interesting China, has proved what those of us who have studied "environmental" issues for 45+ years already knew, that electric car production alone is more harmful to the environment that producing a petrol car and, unless a petrol car os doing anything less than about 40mpg, the actual affect of the environment is less that an electric car.

That is of course, if we accept the assumption that cars are a major problem, again, a myth perpetrated by governments who want the tax and motor manufacturers who want to sell you a nice new "clean" car.

When people wake up to the real issues, over-population and massive habitat and rain forest destruction to feed it, then we may change things. Sadly, there's no money is targeting either problem. End of story.

Re: Beautiful E-Car

The story's only just beginning..

Most of us couldn't care less about the environment, and my recent visit to California and Nevada shows me just how far behind we are in the electric car thing. In SF and LA they are everywhere even small Teslas that I didn't know existed.

I bet that our IC motor cut off date will be brought forward to 2025 like the rest of the planet, then the fun will begin..

It's like home pcs back in the '80's, "...nah.. those things will never catch on" or the satellite technology launched from the Isle of Wight.. "..no, we can't see any commercial use for this, project closed!"

It is about Politics - green issues and votes and taxation.

A Political decisions is all about:

Making the right decision for the wrong reason

or Making the wrong decision for the right reason

Who said Politicians are self centered?
