Taxation

Hi all
I hope some one out there will be able to simplify this process for me !When I bought my coupe last year it was immediately put on sorn because of the work needing to be done,I am still working my way through things and it wonít be ready for the road until next spring. Will I have to pay road tax as the date of first registration is January the first 1979, the build date says nov 78 on the build sheet. Will I have to produce a valid MOT also when applying for historical vehicle taxation !!.I am hoping to apply come March time,I have been told by my local MOT man obtaining an MOT pass will be difficult because of the emissions etc,(I have kept the L82 engine bog standard

If I understand what youíre saying correctly, youíre stating that your car is currently SORNíd and will be off the road until March 2019. So I assume that it is actually declared SORN and not just in your garage, straight from the docks. If it is SORNíd it is recognised by the DVLA, so you will have a V5

By some simple searching it is quite easy to find the rules (Law) about Vehicle Tax, for historic cars. If the car and therefore the V5 are dated correctly, the historical status is automatic so any Road Tax due will be defined on the V11 Tax Renewal, as and when that lands on your welcome mat. It shouldnít matter when the car was built or first registered, because by March 2019, both the dates you have referenced will be more than 40 years ago, meaning zero Tax

If the car is not yet registered and/or there is some misunderstanding over the precise age (often the case with Swansea and imported vehicles) then ask the Club to give you a Dating Letter, which will give a precise model year based on a decode of the VIN. These letters are free for CCCUK Members and are accepted by DVLA as fact - FYI, there are only a few organisations in the UK that the DVLA recognise as the authority to provide these. Fortunately CCCUK is one of them.

So with a correctly dated V5, there should be no negotiation over Tax, as itís simply black and white. Tax the vehicle online and itís a piece of cake.

As for the MOT and the comments from your local man, I suggest that you talk to someone who knows what heís actually talking about! Clearly this guy doesnít, because there are literally tens of 1000s of vehicles running around that pre-date the emissions test, so how do you think that they pass the MOT test every year??

Also read this (section 5): https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mot-changes-20-may-2018. DVLA websites tend to quite informative over this kind of stuff , thus avoid the "man in the pub said" level of facts, that circulate around Clubs
