C3 Auto Box Issue Just Developed

Hello all

Need advice on my 72 350 auto convertible

Are there any C3 owners who have changed their th350 auto boxes for the 4 speed 700R4 units. If so I have a few questions for you all

Is it an easy swap?
what other items are required, cross member and prop shaft maybe?

Any info would be helpful, maybe you can recommend someone and what sort of money could I need for the transplant(ballpark figure )

thanks
Steve

I got my, 79 converted, done by Corvette Kingdom, give Scott a call and he can go thru it all with you, not cheap, but makes the car so much better, and you can expect at least another 7-10 mpg, I was averaging 25mpg on mine, which was a daily driver.

Thanks Mick,

the swap has been on my mind for a while it would definitely benefit from
the extra gear...today in heavy traffic it stuck in 1st and then started slipping and had to nurse it home. so rather throw money at an upgrade than a rebuild.
cheers

Definitely worth it. I had my 79 for 15 years, covering over 120,000 miles (I did say it was my daily driver!) in 3 years after the change to the 700, the savings in fuel just about paid for the work! At 100mph, you're pulling around 3500 rpm, unlike with the old 3 speed, where the engine would be screaming at near the top end of the revs!
Be aware that, if like I had, you have a bespoke exhaust, that may have to be changed to accommodate the larger tranny housing, also one of the cross members has to be cut away and replaced, but Scott can explain all this if you call him.
Hope it all works out for you Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

What does this conversion cost? Would the money be better spent on a c3 with manual box? Im guessing a few £, looking at kits from the states, they start around $4000, plus shipping, vat etc. So weíll into the £5000 bracket. Unless of course you find a donor car and get the box overhauled before install.
Iíd love a manual, the auto is a bit vague at best, but itíll probably come when/if I upgrade the car.

Full conversion, back in 2008, I paid £2400. The change makes the car feel like a modern car to drive, shifting is really smooth, and unlike the 3 speed, kick down ALWAYS works, dramatic when you get a full kickdown from top to first. Cruising at a steady 80mph is a pleasure, around 2300rpm, unlike the 4000 plus with the 3 speed!

Thatís a much more reasonable price, Iím guessing they used a donor car and/or used box?

Thanks, guys for all your thoughts and input,

Clearly, i have a big decision to make on whether to stay with a 3 speed or go for the 4 speed which would tick a lot of boxes.

regards

700 R4 if Auto, but if Manual a 5 speed is necessary if you wish to drop the cruising revs.
