Front indicator/side light mod without switchbacks


Hi, Iíd like to sort the front indicators/side lights, as my switchbacks are doing odd things.
Iím going to use the side wing mounted running light as a side indicator, but want to separate the current side/indicator light. But, as it currently flashes the side light, how do I overcome this? Iím happy to drill the current light assy and fit an additional orange lamp for an indicator, using the old lamp as a side light only.
Any ideas?

It is not the method I used, but quite a few people have added a bulb into teh existing side/indicator lamp unit. I understand that if you drill into it and fit one of those rubber mounted bulb holders for the indicator lamp, the orange will "overpower" the white side light when it flashes, so showing a yellow flasher, but white side light. You just need to separate the wiring from the original bulb holder..

I have included the side marker lamps in the indicator circuit on ours. I was unhappy with showing an amber lamp, in case it was cinfused with an indicator and someone pulled out in front of me!

You need to remove the side marker from the original wiring loop and add a wire from the indicator circuit directly to it, so that it flashes in time (not alternately) with the front indicator. I have only fitted a pretty low powered bulb, as anything too high will speed up the flasher unit too much. By adding, I think, about a 4 or 5 watt bulb, the flasher speed has risen slightly, to within the legal tolerance (in case anyone ever measures that!)

Thanks for the info, thatís exactly what I was thinking of doing. My switchback flash at different speeds, depending if side or main beam is on.
So I just separate the indicator wire, run it plus an earth to a new 5w lamp, drill the existing sidelight, then also route the indicator wire to the marker, thatís it?
Also, do you know if the front orange marker is a direct replacement for the rear red marker, so I have side rear indicators?

Iíve just swopped out the front and rear markers, and they are a direct fit. Thumbs up

My 70 had the orange bulb. I effectively split the the lens by removing the bulb holder, cutting and radiusing a piece of ally then siliconing it in place to allow for a bulb either side. I then wired different coloured LED bulbs each side from the existing bulb holder. I also needed to change the flasher unit for a solid state type. It works well with little bleed.
A phaff to radius the ally but the good thing is I didn't have to chop the wiring up. It would be straight forward to return this to stock if anyone wanted to.

Tim, That sounds about it! The old style flasher unit is a bi-metal unit, so affected by the drain on it. American flashers are always a little slow compared to the UK, so the addition of the 5 W bulb in the side marker speeded it up to the UK spec!

I didn't know that the front and rear side markers were the same, I know they looked it, but I've never tried to swap. (I still run the rears as red side markers) You may need to think about the replacement flasher unit mentioned if you have all those indicators.

Hi, yes, Iíll see how they do when all wired up, and if theyíre not flashing right Iíll swop the flasher. Is there a generic one available in the U.K.?
The side makers fit on opposite sides, so front left fits rear right etc.

Yes the flasher was changed for the led's to work . Needed a solid state. I left my rears as is US style. I had a lenient mot tester. Now I don't need an MOT. Im maybe taking a chance but its got to be a real jobs worth I think to ticket me and I didn't want to cut up my loom up.

The no mot thing is great, loving the fact itís just the insurance to pay for to have it sitting in the garage! Still surprised thereís no need for an initial mot for imports.
