Watch out for tax and customs

I ordered from rock auto a harmonic balancer and header gaskets on 19th June, total £205 with delivery.
Just received a letter today saying I need to pay £66 charges 😳. Thatís crazy!

I ordered £1000 of parts of another US company any paid £185 charges so how the hell has this one come up as £66

Re: Watch out for tax and customs

It really depends on two things

Firstly, if the value of the goods you have ordered are below a certain value, then some UK taxes don't apply.. Import tax, for instance. Do not ask me for the break point, because I do not know...

Secondly, it depends on the shipping method you select at checkout, with Rock. Some UK shipping agents will pay all of the UK tax on your behalf and then seek to recover it from you, before delivery, plus their "handling fees" which are of course, subject to more VAT.

Don't ask me for the answer to this, but I too ordered a harmonic balancer, plus some other bits and pieces, from Rock in early June. Shipped via FedEx, using their 2 business day service. Total cost including shipping and UK VAT was about £130. Paid all the UK taxes at point of sale. Ordered Friday evening, parts arrived 1145 on Monday morning

My view on your issue is that if you select quality shipping agents, you will pay a little more for a painless transaction....

Thanks for the info.
I just wish it was clearer so we know the best option to pick.
Paying pretty much a third of the items value in taxes/customs is a joke

I'd always go for the FedEx 3 day option from RockAuto. Forgot to select it once and my parcel spent a week touring Germany before Parcelforce wouldn't deliver it before I paid the tax and they charged an £11 administration fee which was more than the VAT.

I have wrote various threads about this, you must pick a shipping option that lets you pre-pay your VAT so you donít have to pay Parcelforce and your parts get to you a week earlier.
Usually the second shipping option lets you do this!
