Failed oil pump drive

Image
I don't know why it is but when I get 'issues' with the '68 they are never really that straightforward. And this is most certainly one of them.
The story.
Essex Regions annual cruise to the Museum of Power American Car and Hot Rod Show to the old waterworks pumping station at Ulting near Maldon, Essex.
A great place to visit if you like 'big' mechanical stuff (and I mean really BIG!)
Not long after a friendly 'joust' on the dual carriageway to help confirm which of us had best performance (not me this time) with fellow member Tony Rudd in his 'huffed' C5Z06 I had a total loss of oil pressure. Later removal of the distributor showed that the oil pump drive shaft that locates in the base of the distributor had completely sheared (and the reason for zero oil pressure)
Now I can hope that simply replacing the oil pump drive shaft may be all that is required - and presuming there has been no other damage to the engine its would be a bit of a pain to do but simple enough. However I really need to find the root cause of the 'issue'. Perhaps when I remove the oil pan the reason for the oil pressure loss will be apparent (seized oil pump/detached pick up tube etc) but it's a very rare thing to happen. Fellow big block Vettehead and one time Essex member Pete Knodt had the oil pump pick-up tube fall off the oil pump on his engine - a very rare occurrence and one that usually results in significantly reduced pressure, but not total loss (racer guys usually weld the pick-up tube to the oil pump) The saga no doubt will continue... Scratchchin

Cor blimey! Who'd have a "hot-rodded" Vette, eh? Very Happy

Hope it is in fact a simple issue.... Mind you, even dropping the sump doesn't sound that simple to me! Rolling Eyes

Tony, you've got to take into account Ross's failing oil pressure would have meant he was several hundred horsepower down....He wouldn't have wanted to mention that!!!

'Itching' is not the word that first comes to mind Frank..............'Dreading', 'Anxious', 'Hopeful', 'Lucky' are words perhaps more appropriate Scratchchin Readit
