1970’s paint jobs

Back in the mid 70's and 80's when custom airbrushed paintjobs were such a big thing - however to me iback then was the very antithesis of style when applied to a Corvette or Mustang - OK on vans though. Can't ignore the skilsl of people like Ray Mumford though (Ray Mumford).

Geoff Ridgeway was pretty good as well. remember John Jemmetts mustang Vampella, or his challenger The artfull Dodger. They were works of art on wheels. Barry Sturgess’s G-Force mustang was pretty cool as well.

Takes me back to the days of Custom Car magazine !!
Still got loads of them ( I think) in the loft. I’m now tempted to dig them out and relive my youth.
That’s the great thing nowadays, you’ve always got a camera handy to take pictures. Hardly anybody had a camera back then, so no pictures of those marvellous cars except in magazines.

I had a 1979 Trans am that had murals of smokey and the bandit on it painted by Geoff Ridgeway , at the time they were reputedly some of his best work done on a car. Some of you might have seen it as I went to lots of show. The American Auto Clubs shows at Billing Aquadrome where ITV filmed it for their news program (still got the old VHS tape of it somewhere).

Eventually sold it to a gold dealer from Jersey, now that’s another story in itself.

Did you have the murals done, or did you buy it like that. If you bought it with them done it could have been Andy Kay’s old car, he had Ridgeway paint it. I watched some of it being done. Andy didn’t keep it long after having it done, he just liked doing it or having it done then do something else.

I purchased it like that from a dealer in London, it was called the Bandit. It had murals of Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields on the bonnet and Jerry Reed (the snowman) driving his truck into a police car painted on the boot lid, the word Bandit was painted on the bottom of both front wings, also a lot of pinstriping done on it.

when I got it I pulled the engine out and reworked it with lots of power goodies, gearbox was replaced with a stronger one, high stall torque converter, larger diameter propshaft, plus lots of other power related items, then added a nitros kit to it.
Had a few runs down drag strip with it.

This could be an article in itself.

I wonder how many hours work went into producing this. Let alone the cost 🤑
