Thanks for this, JR!

As usual, the Corvette looks very good value against the competition. Be interesting to see if the ZR1 comes to the UK and, if so, how much it will be.

As I understand it, taxes vary from state to state don't they? How much would you say would be the average amount that one would have to add over there to get the final price?

Cheers

Hi Mark

You're correct, every state has a different amount required for buyer paying a vehicle sales tax

Calculating Sales Tax in Texas on Purchases from Licensed Dealers

For retail sales of new and used motor vehicles involving licensed motor vehicle dealers, the motor vehicle sales tax is based on the sales price, less any amount given for trade-in vehicle(s) and/or dealer discounts.
For example, if a purchaser traded in a vehicle worth $15,000 to a licensed dealer as part of the purchase of a $42,000 vehicle, motor vehicle tax is due as follows:

Item
Amount
Total Sales Price
$42,000.00
Less Trade-In
- 15,000.00
Taxable Value
$27,000.00
Tax Rate
x .0625
Sales Tax Due
$1,687.50
The selling dealer’s signature on the title application is an acceptable record of the sales price.
The CTAC can, however, request to see the dealer’s invoice or sales receipt from the dealer or purchaser.

For private-party purchases of used motor vehicles in Texas, or out-of-state purchases of motor vehicles brought into Texas for Texas use, the motor vehicle tax requires a comparison of the amount paid for the vehicle to a percentage of the vehicle’s standard presumptive value (SPV) or certified appraisal. See Standard Presumptive Value in this guide.

Used Motor Vehicle – Sales and Use Tax
Who is responsible for this tax?

A person who purchases a motor vehicle in Texas owes motor vehicle sales tax.

A Texas resident, a person domiciled or doing business in Texas, or a new Texas resident who brings into Texas a motor vehicle that was purchased or leased out of state owes motor vehicle use tax, the new resident tax or the gift tax, as applicable.

Private-Party Purchases and Standard Presumptive Values

Standard presumptive value (SPV) is used to calculate sales tax on private-party sales of all types of used motor vehicles purchased in Texas. It is also used to calculate use tax on motor vehicles brought into Texas that were purchased from a private-party out of state. For more information, please see Private-Party Purchases and Standard Presumptive Values.
Rates
  • Sales: 6.25 percent of sales price, minus any trade-in allowance.
  • The taxable value of private-party purchases of used motor vehicles may be based on the standard presumptive value.
  • Use:
    • Texas residents – 6.25 percent of sales price, less credit for sales or use taxes paid to other states, when bringing a motor vehicle into Texas that was purchased in another state.
    • New residents – $90 new resident tax due in lieu of use tax on a vehicle brought into Texas by a new resident, if the vehicle was previously registered in the new resident's name in another state or foreign country.
