9,000 Corvettes Sitting On Dealer Lots.......

The next-generation Corvette is coming -- we know that’s the case, we're just not exactly sure when Chevrolet is going to release its midengine C8 ‘Vette into the world. What we do know is that there is a major surplus of perfectly good current-generation Corvettes sitting on dealer lots. According to eInventoryNow.com, there are around 9,000 ‘Vettes in inventory at the moment awaiting buyers.

That might not sound like many until you look at the January sales numbers for Chevy’s top sports car, estimated at 800 or so Corvettes according to CorvetteBlogger (GM moved to quarterly sales reporting not long ago). That would make it the worst sales month in the seventh-generation Corvette’s history. You might be able to blame the polar vortex for the slow Corvette sales, but a more likely culprit is the upcoming C8 Corvette.

So, we should expect great lease/rebate deals on the Corvette, right? Not so fast: Currently, Chevy is only offering a special lease plan for the C7 ‘Vette, and dealers aren’t doing much to promote them either. Michigan’s own Les Stanford, also known as the Corvette King, is offering a 15 percent discount on certain ‘Vette models, but that isn’t exactly a fire sale.

We’re sure that the ‘Vette’s sales will perk up after the Midwest thaws out and people want to experience fun in the sun, and even more so when the C8 Corvette hits dealers. Hell, the surplus could even be strategic -- knowing that C7 production will have to slow as Chevy retools its Bowling Green, Kentucky, factory for the new ‘Vette -- even though the C7 is expected to be sold alongside the C8 Corvette. Most likely it's a combination of all of these situations leading to a 230-plus day surplus of Corvettes sitting in showrooms.
