Axle driveshaft play

Hi, Just jacked the back end of my 72' up to do hand brake and noticed some play on back wheel. When looking closer I found the axle driveshaft is moving out from the Diff about 2 or 3 mm.
This is causing the top of the top of the wheel to pull out. If anyone can advise me what needs doing here I would be very grateful, Thanks.

Just found an old thread that reads this is normal which is why you should not check for wheel bearing play by rocking wheel at 12 O' clock & 6 O'clock position.
So if I don't heard anything I guess this is ok. Thanks again. Clive

Hi

Yes, I believe some play is acceptable. But....... You might like to take a look at this thread on the Corvette Forum. It does give a few specs:

Side Yoke Play Causing Vibration? - CorvetteForum - Chevrolet Corvette Forum Discussion

The movement is caused usually by the inner ends of the yokes wearing. (They run against the cross shaft and in effect, take the weight of the car. There were issues in some years with case hardening so the ends wear.) If that wear becomes too great, the solution is to replace the yokes which, unfortunately means removing the diff, a fun little job!

I hate working on anything related to the rear suspension of a C3 (same as C2).

When first obtained, changed out the strut rods due to just plain worn out, adjustability was shot, could not keep the wheels from cambering out / \ . Metal to metal parts were welded together due to age, gallon of WD40, Liquid Wrench, sledge hammers, chiseling, applied heat, and a myriad of really bad words were repeated many times, had to almost break parts off. What a big PITA.

So smart-ass me goes the cheap route and purchased a set of off-shore strut rods (China I think). Had the same issue, not made exactly to original specs, so went the right route and purchased a set of OEM specked parts. So far, holding up well. (y)
