Driver killed in Rohnert Park crash after Corvette slams into tree, splitting car in half

A driver was killed, and a passenger injured Monday night when a Chevrolet Corvette crashed into a tree and split in half near Sonoma State University, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol investigators say the driver was traveling at an “excessively high speed” before losing control of the sports car and veering off the road near Laurel Drive and Petaluma Hill Road, CHP-Santa Rosa Officer David deRutte said.
Officers responded to the crash by 10:20 p.m. at the edge of the university campus.
The driver, found inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sonoma County Coroner’s Bureau will release his identity after notifying his family.
