In the below chart, the spike # 1 was unanimously evaluated by the Corvette team to be the best sounding sound point and system.
The spike at 1250 Hz is what is considered the most desirable sound as we humans perceive it. #’’s 2 and # 3 designs were quickly put aside, never to be reconsidered.
The outer two as many have commented here are different visually looking.
They are smaller, have no “innards.” They are for quieter-chosen sounds.
Their pipes feeding them are literally smaller in diameter.
We learned, a very nice surprise, that the inner two tips’ valve are controllable in progressive 2% increments.
So very different from SR’s which are completely open or closed…
Of course, as you change your driver mode selector, you will control your exhaust sound levels a major amount.
From “wake up your neighbor” mode to truly stealthy should you wish.
As the loudest levels, GM’s own lost distance testing engineers, as they shared during part of LT6 event, commented that they are so loud that even some of our typical Corvette customers who are doing hour-after hour-long distance cruising could find them annoying loud, and so we needed to find a way to give them a quieter option.
Mind you, this is from the team who had as one of its goals to provide more cabin exhaust sound level than the Stingray has.
Hence, deliberately, the sound level in touring mode is significantly quieter than it is in both sport/track modes as one of the engineers further quipped during the seminar, “no one will need to glance down and look at the DMS to know they are or are not in touring mode.”
So pleasant that for efficiently and sound level modulation, we have lots of choices in how loud we want our Z06’s to be, adjusting them as we want.
Thank the 2% incrementally-adjustable valves for part of that.
