'Cleverly' buying an emission era C3 Corvete

Keep looking on here and 'on-line' at C3 Vette's for sale? - can't quite meet the asking price of some of the chrome bumper cars ? - didn't really fancy the idea of a seemingly 'softer' later C3?
Read this article from Hemmings on how with thoughtful selection of engine specification (L82 vs L48) and optional higher numerical axle ratios and perhaps more importantly manual transmission you can 'bag' yourself a car with far more performance that what one might expect of a car from the mid/late 70's thru' early 80's. This era Corvette is also really a good 'building block' for further engine modification if you want to take things further...........

.....or hang the expense and buy this. £50k does seem a serious price for a C3. Are LT1's really worth that money?

I went to see that when it was a private sale back end of last year at 45k.............. Pad stamp has been decked and re-stamped. Could be anything even a truck motor..

I know insurance agreed values are only really tested when you try and claim that agreed value in a claim but my red LT-1 has an agreed replacement value of 80k and my yellow one 60k but that needs looking at as that was agreed before I completed all the work on it. Colour change on the banana flavoured one holds it back a bit which was originally as per the for sale ad you linked - Ontario Orange. Rarity adds value with only 4,977 sold 1970 - 1972. They are a blast to drive with such a high revving motor. I hit 6k last night in the red one but heard a belt slip so backed off. With solid lifters they have a sort of sewing machine 'chatter' about them but cherry bombs on red and glass packs & resonators on yellow drown that out. And of course, only available in manual!

A red LT-1 convertible sold at BJ last year for $225k but non have got anywhere near that kind of price before.

I recognise your pad , it`s Bodelwydden Castle if I am not mistaken . That makes us near neighbours as I live just down the coast in Conwy Castle and that`s even more drafty with no bloody windows in and half the roof missing . Old Owain Glyndwr left it a heck of state !

That was a very well written article by Hemings on the joys of owning a rubber bumper corvette. I think thousands of owners worldwide already know this. The 74-82 are lovely cars. Comfortable, nice to drive, and good looking.
I like the bit where he said “you can only go so fast”. So true in today’s traffic and cameras. Absolutely no point in having a 150+ mph motor nowadays. Where I am you would be hard pressed to do 100 mph.

The old 85mph speedo’s. Ecklers and the like sold thousands of replacements. Probably made ole Ralph a very rich man.

The 85 mph speedo had to be the most cockamamie idea the Americans had in the attempt to reduce speed / emissions !
You can just imagine the scenario - " Gee officer , I couldn`t possibly be doing 120mph , my vee hicle will only go 85 mph ! " :ROFLMAO:

Your laughing, I would bet that has been said to police officers thousand of times once it came in.
