Finally, a month after test drive and deal-making, collected my 60,000 mile manual 2005 C6 and drove it home from Yorkshire to Moray.
Unscheduled overnight just north of Newcastle resulted from the short shift mechanism working loose, requiring 50 miles stuck in 5th gear (I had a dayglo vest and a torch with me but no tools), then an AA pickup and delivery to nearby Advanced Automotive Solutions in Newcastle - I didn't want to fry the clutch with stop / start motoring for the last 15 miles, and it seems to have survived for another 400 miles or so since then without nasty smells or slip.
Very grateful to the club member who recommended AAS, glad I'd logged their position and opening hours before setting off from Yorks just in case, and fabulously pleased that they immediately took in my broken bus and fixed it with new helicoils and got me on my way towards home in super quick time. Thank you again, Stuart, Alistair and the rest of the boys.
I'm so happy with the car. Love the power, noise, torque, handling; and it looks great in red with black wrapped roof and B pillar. Manual box is chunky but really enhances the driving pleasure in my view.
Also making a shout out for Marc Pickering of AutoSpire who sold me the car through his newly set up fine used car business (mostly focussed on cherished 90s and 2000s BMWs), who immediately provided helpful youtube references and other info, and full recompense for rectification cost in no time at all. I feel lucky to have bought the car from Marc.
Due to UK aviation no longer being regulated from Brussels, these days I have to make a 90 mile journey across the Cairngorms to get my flying medical - and it's 6 monthly instead of annual, now I'm 61. It's a bright, clear, sunny day today and I have just the car for the job!
