Full tank fuel smell

Check-out the overflow tube that runs from the filler neck to the side of the car for perishing - also get under the car and check the rubber section of fuel pipe from tank to metal fuel line for porosity......

Just had thought ! Do the earlier C3`s have a rubber gaiter around the filler neck in the rear deck to catch spillage whilst filling the tank ? I guess so  The 1979 / 80 models have a gaiter complete with a drainage pipe moulded in that drains down through the rear bodywork to the road . The gaiter might be split or the drainage pipe come off . I had to repair mine .

When I road tested my first Corvette, a C3 some years ago, the seller stopped at the local garage & put a 'thimble full' of fuel in. No problem I thought as why waste money on filling the tank when the car may be sold within the next hour.
I bought the car & once it was delivered I soon realised it was very low on fuel so I filled it up at my nearest garage - big mistake! The fuel was pouring from the rear of the car at a significant rate. I spoke to the seller who replied " well you don't want that, the car could go up". So with no apparent knowledge of the leak, the seller had 'washed his hands' of the problem, so it was mine to fix.
Back on topic - the leak was caused by a hole in the fuel pipe at the 1st clip holding the pipe in place. Cutting out the old section was an absolute nightmare. I used a mirror & a broken hacksaw blade, finally managing to carry out a good. & safe, repair. At one stage I was considering cutting a hole in the side of the car to get access followed by hopefully a discreet repair. In the end I didn't need to to resort to such savagery, but a very tricky job. Hope this helps.

It certainly looked like it. Not the first offence by this & another person during my time with the car but obviously I won't go into further details re who, although some of my less than perfect experiences have been previously documented.

That seller fuel leak post reminded me of when I bought my first car for myself. Usual thing buying a second hand car from a garage - it was very low on fuel. So immediately drove it to the petrol station to fill up, and like above, some of it ended up on the forecourt. Turns out the filler pipe had a leak in it.
Now, the garage "may" not have known about this as I doubt they'd waste money filling it up. But then you'd like to think they'd check the car prior to sale. Anyway, I didn't blow up or catch fire and they did apologise and did fix the issue. Still concerning though.

I don't know about you guys, but when I go to car shows I always get asked
" How much fuel does it use mate?"
To which I reply
"Every drop I put in it!"
I tell them that mine is a hybrid which always raises a few eyebrows ! I say yeah , "it either uses a lot of petrol . or even more petrol if I give it large on the loud pedal :ROFLMAO:

But our cars are Hybrids - they run on electricity and petrol. Granted the electricity is mostly used to ignite the petrol, but still, they run on both :) That and our cars can move a small distance on electricity alone.... just leave it in gear when you turn the starter :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Now that`s a theory worth promoting . Maybe we can all apply for a Government subsidy ?
