Gear selector tidy up ?

I have ended up removing the cross member on my 81 4 speed manual.
Well while its off i decided to clean up the lot. its a bit grubby as expected.
I was wondering what is best choice of treatment for reassemebly.

Paint hen grease etc etc ? I just think of the paint rubbing off and jamming it up.

I was looking into Zinc plating a couple year back for some boat parts but never did it. Maybe its time to do it now.

Most people at this stage (and expecially if the shifter is a bit sloppy and worn) opt for a replacement Hurst shifter assembly - expensive perhaps but gear shifting is vastly improved.

To late, i have gone and bought some Fluid Film for it.
Well not to late but until i drive it and see what its like there is no point in getting a new shifter.
