Redex ?

Hi All, does anyone here use a redex type petrol system cleaner? As a means to give the carb a bit of a clean through? Any suggestions as to these or the aeresol type carb cleaners you may suggest or reccomend. ?TiAπŸ‘

I use STP Ultra 5 in 1 in the C3 and the daily drivers too as it`s suitable for classic and modern cars . It cleans deposits as well as protects against ethanol corrosion .

I've just used super unleaded in mine and that's it. The Edelbrock carb on it is apparently good up to 85% ethanol from what I read, and my fuel lines look newer than 1968, so hopefully good there too.

I know that supermarket fuel can get some 'bad press' with some people but after several years of using Shell V Power, then Esso zero ethanol whilst they marketed it I chose to to use Tesco Super Unleaded. Generally a little cheaper than most alternatives, OK so not ethanol free but it really seems fine.........and thinking about it right now I would very occasionally get a 'pinking' issue.......haven't had that for ages (and I am running some 'serious' ignition advance, 22 degrees. Also needed to frequently 'tune' idle settings......again haven't needed to do that for ages......perhaps coincidental?

I sometimes put Redex through my C5 fuel system on the basis that it should do some good but noting that it is not probably "needed"!

As far as carb cleaning goes, it's a long time since I put Redex through a carb itself but it used to work well. Put something like 50ml into something which pours well, then just disconnect the air cleaner etc and pour a small amount into the carb with the engine running. Keep pouring a little at a time until you have used it all. Might need to "tick up" the idle speed a bit temporarily. You will get clouds of smoke from the exhaust which is mostly the Redex itself burning off, but it used to clean the intake side rather nicely. Your neighbours won't like it so make sure there is no washing on lines nearby!! You may well also get some helpful person saying your engine is shot. Just smile and say you are testing nitromethane for your next race...

Hope this helps. (y)

I did that years ago in the twin carbs on my Dolomite Sprint . Trickled the Redex in whilst picking up the revs and then took it out for spin and laid a dense smoke screen all around the neighborhood ! :ROFLMAO:

Reminds me of my first car, a Ford Anglia. The days when you'd go and buy petrol, no such thing as self service back then. You'd say " 4 gallon and 2 shots please", the 2 shots being Redex.
As mentioned earlier it was great fun removing the air filter and pouring the Redex down the carb with the engine running, clouds of white smoke down the street - the good old days :D

I well remember as a Nipper travelling in my Dad`s split screen Moggy Minor and him stopping for petrol and " 2 shots" . I was fascinated my this `mystery ` treatment that was always readily to hand at all garages ( they weren`t called petrol stations in those days) in the little conical trigger can .
