Rust

Hi again, fitting the new seat belts to the 72 , i had to remove the rear side trims and
Also the top trims behind the t tops. This exposed a lot of the steel birdcage sections , these , while solid are only thinly coated from the factory with a primer of sorts . A fine surface rust had developed over the last 50 years so I sanded and degreased it all and as it is never seen and I will never be top flight I took the precaution of slapping some silver hammerite over all exposed metal especially on the inner door posts as they look like moisture traps. I will pump some waxoyl down into the nether regions before putting the trims back. Worth a look at yours for the sake of a few self tappers you can have a look and hold back any mild corrosion before it gets serious 👍 also worth a look behind the plastic back panels of the seats as the metal in the spine isnt even primed. While the seats were out I have refreshed the frames and inner bits. Under the drivers seat were a few show entry cards from 2012/ on , a look but please dont touch dash card , a one dime coin and a few other nic nacs. Great to be able to give a good spring clean and proper hoover with the seats out. Only 4 bolts in each so an easy afternoons job, very satisfying. ‘👍

I can wholeheartedly agree that a little preventative maintenance on the birdcage now stops a whole lot of work later on. :)

Also agree that taking the reclining seat mechanism spine out it's sheath on the seat, removing any rust found there and putting a little grease on it makes the whole mechanism last longer and makes it work nice and silky smooth too!

Just think Tim , if some one had done that to your 72 about25 years ago you may have been stuck at home twiddling your thumbs for the last year or so instead of the epic engineering journey you have been on. 😁👍
