Starter Clearance

Hi All
just fitting my new starter whilst I have the SBC 400 engine on the bench. With regard tooth engagement clearance, the paperwork with the starter says 1/8 th inch drill bit (0.125) and my book says 0.025 to 0.060 inch. 1/8 does seem a tad large, What is your experience?

A normal paper clip was the gauge of wire I read to use. That was on my BB I know that the flexplate are different sizes not sure about teeth size though?

Likewise the clearance specified ( lash ) for fitting my lightweight high torque starter was standard paper clip wire guage .
