Weird Speedo Happenings

I have had a speedo problem for ages now and during the early spring months I delved into it . I disconnected the short cable from Cruise Control unit and tested the speedo with an electric drill and it worked fine and the odometer clicked over too . Having dismantled the Cruise Unit which was disabled by previous car mods , I found the tip of the Auto Trans to Cruise Unit all munged up so thought I had found the problem . So I binned the Cruise Unit and bought a longer `Non Cruise Control ` cable and fitted that . The gear drive in the auto trans has been checked over and is fine . The first test drive had speedo working at low speed and then bouncing as speed rose and then packed up completely . Then yesterday on the way home from the Wroxall Park event the speedo started to work from zero to about 30 mph then drop to zero and stop working until I next slowed right down or stopped then read up to 25 / 35 mph ish then stop again !! Any ideas before I splash out on a new speedo gauge ?

Rev counter drive on mine is mechanical (same as speedo) - that once was doing the 'bobbing' around thing......and inner flexi snapped. Bought a new inner, throughly lubricated the outer cable and re-routed it slightly to 'present' more gentle bends..........

After disconnecting my Speedo cable to get the instrument pod out, I had trouble getting it to seat properly on the speed resulting in a similar effect.
