£6 a gallon ??? What a shame ! You US types have been spoilt for donkies years . I picked up a parking violation ticket in Salem a few years back and went to City Hall to pay the fine . The very helpful girl on the desk said she would speak to her boss about getting it cancelled as we were Brits on holiday . I said "forget it thanks " , it costs more than the penalty fine to park for 4 hours in my home town ! She was gob smacked and then even more so when I told her how much a gallon of gas cost over here . You lived in another world :(
Think about a 'trip' from here in Greater London in to the West End......in the 'wrong' car. By 'wrong' I mean a typical non-compliant higher CO2 'run around.
Rip off 1. Congestion charge at £15.00 -
Rip off 2. ULEZ charge at £12.50.
Rip off 3. Fuel at, say £15.00.
Rip off 4. Want to park somewhere 'on-street' in Central London? that could be anything up to £10.00 or more for an hour (and you'll probably be limited to 2 hours maximum).
Rip off 5. Want to park off-street in a multi-story NCP type car park for several hours? that could be similar cost per hour to on-street parking (allow £30+) -
Feeling hungry? better budget for that, say £30 to £200 per head depending on whether its McDonalds or somewhere 5 star
Its getting a little late now (11.30 pm) as you sip your after dinner drinks - better move your asses as the £12.50 ULEZ charge you paid earlier is only valid for 24 hours.........
Rip off 6. You've got 30 minutes to get the hell of the central area or have to pay a further £12.50........
EDIT - that 'central' area becomes anywhere within the A 406 North and South Circular roads as from October.......

Base model Escorts, Talbot Avengers estate. Sounds all really nice. Guess what car my folks gave me when I was young? Go on, guess? I bet you can't..... well, maybe you can..... yes, that's right - Nothing. I had to save and buy my own car a few years later.
Same here.. the Talbot Avenger was a company car (tool) that enabled me to earn the company money. We were quite poor and I'm one of five kids. My parents did right by us but buying us a car 🤣 NFW

And from the 25th October, the ULEZ area is being extended to the north and south circulars. I also think that it will be increased in price ( in the near future) from the current £12.50 to £15.00 the same as the congestion charge.

Really? Congestion or ULEZ or both.
Once they see the money it brings in, many other city centres will consider/introduce it.
Clean Air Zone that also reaches out to the 'burbs 🙄 SWWBO is already checking out newer horse carriages as the 2004 Daf could be £60 per day 😬

There is another (and longer term) factor to all this congestion charging, 20 mph speed limits, excessive parking fees and various other things to catch the motorist and resident.............so many people will be moving out of the larger cities to try and escape all these punitive attempts to fleece vehicle users that the inner parts of the cities will end up becoming like ghetto's..........

A friend of mine is thinking exactly the same thing. Currently lives in Islington. Diabolical parking, so many road closures. When he sees what he can buy in the sticks for the price of his flat, it’s got him seriously thinking about moving out.

Correct but don't forget the surrender of car lanes to fat men in lycra on bikes. It's clear to me us motorists are not welcome. On my last but one speed awareness course the instructor told us of a new highway code ruling instructing cyclists to ride two or three abreast to force the motorist to wait to pass 🤬

There will be a lot of blood and guts on the front of my Jeep then ! :devilish:

Oh but the local authorities do want the motorists (well, their money anyway) for the revenue from parking and fines from misreading poorly laid out roads that 'trap' and fine motorists. Islington was the one of the very first lefty, socialist, ethic infiltrated local authorities to lay down the 20 mph speed limit. This along with speed humps and carriageway reducing schemes actually increases airbourne pollution and then enables local authorities to say "we told you so, look what cars do to our streets - there shouldn't be any cars at all in our borough"
Ignorant people in the respective boroughs do not realise that the local authorities mis-management of traffic is the primary cause of the increases in pollution.
Do you think that electric vehicles stop airbourne pollution?......no. Think of particulates from brake materials and tyres......that'll be the next purge.

Just people with a good 'insight' as to what would these cars would mean in future years. During the late 50's and early 60's perfectly good American cars here in the UK were worth more or less nothing. The reason? - fuel economy (more, the lack of it!) - the UK as a nation was skint - few people could afford to run cars with sub 10 mpg figures. Those who actually could afford the cost of fuel bought tended to home produced vehicles. In the USA with their annual model/style changes where 'last years car' would be out of fashion with a booming economy and individual workers wages comparitively high, lightly taxed and cheap finance schemes there was effectively a glut of cheap perfectly good cars on the market. Manufacturers would product 'Saturday Night Specials', thinly disguised drag racers that with simple modifications be taken to the drag races and win. I had one of the '71 429 Mustand Nassau mentioned - who could put up with cars that had a Detriot locker, 4.11 axle that would mean 4000 rpm at 70 mph and single figure fuel economy...........we could, but not the average car buyer.

Back in 1975 my 1975 C3 I was lucky to get 8 MPG, but 104 octane leaded gas was only 30 cents a gallon (and if you did a fill up they gave you a carton of smokes) and back then once out of town limits there was no speed limit at all

Never understood why my mileage was so bad :)

But you know when you want it, you need it

Dropped $150,000 plus for this (1990s money), but was not legal to drive on public streets (or until caught doing so :)
All carbon fiber body and tubed chassis, means haul ass ! :)

Islington like so many other formerly 'dodgy' boroughs transformed itself from a rough, run down area some 40 years or so ago. Then supposed 'luminaries' like Tony Blair (before prime minister) moved to the area and its future was 'cemented'.......problem with all these areas is that there is always an indigenous popoulation who with previous generations have lived in the area for years. 'New world' monied occupants do not always 'fit' too well. About that time our next door neighbours bought a 3/4 storey period house just off Essex road before prices became silly. He was a silversmith working in Hatton Garden and for his family was a sensible move. However the family were out at work all day and not surprisingly were burgled several times in only two or three years.

Got caught like that last week. In the ULEZ zone, missed the midnight end by 5 minutes, had to pay again. Most times it wouldn’t have mattered as I would be in the zone the following day anyway, but that particular day, I wasn’t going in the following day. Sod’s law, £12.50 for 5 minutes.

When I was a kid, if you lived in Islington, you made out you lived somewhere else. It was a real run down area. Now it’s mega money. A friends parents still own the house they bought in the early 60’s. It was condemned when they bought it. Now I would think 1.5- 2.0 million. How times have changed.
