Another L88 pops up on BAT

'Modern' manual transmissions are limited in terms of 'useful' ratios by the CAFE regulations the manufacturers have to abide by - i.e. 6 speed transmissions with 2 overdrive ratios wtf! - if only they could apply the lower (and closer) ratios of a Muncie M21/22 with an extra low first gear ratio for town crawling and a 50% overdrive 6th ratio for motorway cruising. Modern 8 and 10 speed automatics have all the benefits you need for both economy AND performance - generally always in the right gear and the right time.......

Mine. The 'baby' 3.0 ltr SC but pretty quick anyway but appalling MPG at 30 but it does encourage you to stick your foot in it so more is available if you drive 'normally' It eats tyres too, on my 3rd set and only done 50k

It's a blast to drive especially exiting the M6 Toll booth bouncing off the rev limiter foot slammed ;) but prior to this I dragged a fat Jag XFS around the country that returned 45 MPG

Must have been one one those smelly diesel things.........👹
I went to pick up a brand new F type V6 S ( a sweeting handling car than the V8 ) with my Jag enthusiast mate from JLR in Coventry for an event we were involved in when the F Type was first launched . What a car ! Drive the very long way back from the factory to Northampton via all the best A roads we knew of . Total scream when given the beans 😁 The same mate has an XFRS -R that`s as rare as hens teeth , only 500 built I believe and his is the only Italian Blue one , One hell of a 4 door luxury sports saloon and 550 bhp hooliganism thrown in :ROFLMAO:

They're are a blast for sure and will probably stick with them when this one wears out. Couple of years back we had a very expensive crane operation through the night in Sheffield so I went to 'supervise' (get in the way) Finished at 3:00 am then headed back over the Snake Pass in pitch dark. As I dropped into Glossop shaking I realised I might have used up a life.

I can well imagine , Snake Pass in the dark at speed would make me need my brown corduroy trousers on
I will never forget the first time unleashed the full capability of the XKR - R Performance . I only had it about a week and set off on one of my routine Friday evening jaunts from Northampton up to Bridgnorth in Shropshire for the weekend . Had done that journey once a month for best part of 30 years and knew the route blindfold . Every bend , every sight line and every up and coming straight . I had been stuck behind several cars that were stuck behind an artic going westwards across Warwickshire and couldn`t get past the line up for miles . I knew a long straight was coming up in a mile or two and thought , if nothings coming the other way I can pass the lot in one go . Hey presto , road clear , totally floored it and OMG ! all hell broke loose . One second I was dawdling , the next I was doing gods know what speed ! Didn`t dare take my eyes off the road to glance at the speedo as I gripped the wheel to stop myself ending up in the boot :ROFLMAO:

Looks like I inadvertently started a trend on modern auto gearboxes are awesome - to which I completely agree with you. Fantastic bits of kit, more gears, smoother, faster and better MPG. I can completely see the appeal for many people.

However, *I* am not interested in "easy speed" - aka put my foot down and the car does it all for me. I'm very much into my car involvement and engaging with the vehicle. I've driven many an automatic, and so far they've not been for *me*. I'm far happier driving a slower car with more involvement, than driving a much faster machine that does most of it for me.

As an aside Chuffer, love the Jag, fantastic looking car. Back in the day I lusted after one of those and started looking around for one. Then later on it dawned on me they are all automatics. So that ruled that out then.

Glad you liked the Jag . In terms of performance , power , handling , looks and luxury plus all the toys that were spec`d of the Jaguar options list by first owner , it was a fantastic car . And values are going up now for good low mileage ones .

Indeed, when I was looking at the Jag about 10-15 odd years ago, they seemed good value for money. But now, like you said, the prices have gone up. Like most interesting "older" cars nowadays.

Welcome to the `If Only Club` Captain . When I look back on some of the cars I had sold for for peanuts and are now an appreciating asset
Jaguar XJS , an immaculate and unmolested Ford Escort RS Turbo and a Triumph Dolomite Sprint to name a few .

Yeah , the Dolly was great and the 16 valve 4 pot 2 litre engine was quite advanced for its time in a production car . They were renowned for head gasket problems though due to alloy head on cast iron block and I had mine skimmed and replaced twice . Mine was the classic Mimosa Yellow with black vinyl roof and had a broad black stripe along the waste line and over the boot lid .. Also Koni adjustable shox , lowered suspension , a big bore exhaust and Peco silencer and twin Hella spot lights the size of dustbin lids ! With overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears at the flick of a switch on the gear knob it was in effect a 6 speed box and a hoot to drive :D

Another BAT sale this time for a '72 base model (200BHP) SCG Convertible $62,500

Ultra low miles Top Flight and Bloomington Gold Survivor but flippin' heck. I'd have to go through it and clean it up but the bulk of the value is in the untouched condition it's in so probably now (and previously) just a garage ornament

Got to be good for all C3 owners any way..
