Many years ago I was introduced to a pair of guys opposite Romford railway station who worked (and family owned) a fish and chip shop. Their car even then in the late 60's was a desirable mark 2 Zodiac convertible. The hydraulically operated hood mechanism although working had a huge lead that required frequent topping up to raise or lower.......and, yes as you may have guessed cooking oil was used.....
