Hurst shifter

Update, I stripped the console plate and shifter gaitor today. There is side to side slop in the shifter plates before The side movement to engage reverse. I managed to get a 1/3 of a turn on the bolt that locates the plates within the shifter body, this did not remove the slop but may have reduce it marginally.
I reckon a rebuild will make quite a difference. As a reference for you, there’s absolutely no slop in my new shifter - In neutral the spring loading holds it firmly between 3rd and 4th. The spring loading is strong and needs reasonable pressure to pull it left for 1st and 2nd, then really quite a lot of force to go left again for reverse. I remember when I first tried it I thought something was wrong because it wouldn’t go across into reverse, turns out I just wasn’t using enough force - the spring loading is that strong. Forward and backward into the gears is smooth, only slight resistance felt from the detent springs in the gearbox.

Thanks forest, mine is doing all that too but just the little bit of sideways movement. I have packed it with grease for now and tried the half tennis ball as the dog toy was too restrictive . Hoping for positive results upon testing. 👍

I thought the video showing the 'mods' to a new Hurst shifter mechanism were interesting......and relatively simply if you have access to a surface grinder 😵‍💫 and can remove a few thou' from thicker than stock shim steel to tighten-up clearances.
