Not to keen on the headlight modifications. I personally think the standard pop up headlights suite the cars shape.
The add on cibie type spot lights do nothing for the car either. They look exactly what they are. A stuck on accessory.
But, as long as the owner likes them, there great.
If we all liked the same thing it would be pretty boring

I wonder if they have any engine cooling issues.
No - as headlamps are permanently in the 'up' position. Its only when in the retracted position that there is a small obstruction to airflow - if you have cooling issues on a hot day use the headlamp overide switch and if in traffic made sure your have a couple of car lengths between you and the car in front to be sure of cooler air going thru' your rad. Ask me how I know all this...........

Of course, no front number plate helps.

One reason why I lowered the front numberplate on mine - see image - l/h side in retracted position - r/h side 'up'. You can see the fibre covers for the headlamps behind the grille - its an interesting concept using BMW type 'halo' reflectors and bulbs but IMHO I think it looks better with the apertures 'blacked-out'. 20201112_162402.jpg

Are those plates there to protect the headlights from stones when retracted?
Would it be worth lightening them with a drill?.. or is there something on the other side of them that prevents that?

They are only a plastic material, no weight to them. I'll have to check and see if they blow backwards in the airstream when headlights are in the 'up' position.
