Sad to have to report the passing of Rob Davis , Rob attended the sw area meets in recent yearsin his black 1980 vette. He had been having treatment for 14 years for cancer and was managing it through various stages . Things were stable for a few years but it returned more aggressively last year and sadly we lost Dear Rob just before christmas. He was a talented paint and body man and skilled , time served mechanic. An american car enthusiast and hot rodder. I met him in 79 or 80 when I purchased from him, a ford 289 V8 and C4 auto trans , together with a chromed and painted jag irs on a crossmember. I had started building a 55 splitscreen morris minor hot rod on an altered jago pop chassis. Me and a small group of cornish car nuts became friends of Robs and used to travel up to his club meets in plympton with the Tamar Valley Roadsters, attending shows in devon and cornwall. Rob was always so friendly and helpful to us younger boys. Generous with his time and knowledge .
We lost touch unfortunately after a couple of years as work and wives and kids came along but we never forgot him and his warm personality.
Roll on 41 years and I finally get the 72 corvette I had wanted since I was 15, I join the club , and speaking to Rob Harrison (sw rep) and talking about the old hot rod/ yank scene I asked what happened to Rob Davis, to my surprise he said ,” Rob has a corvette and is in the club”!!, october 2020,
My import paperwork had not been completed so the vette was not yet on the road. I attended a meet of the sw area and met the members and admired all the vettes. Meeting Rob Davis again after all that time was the icing on the cake of my journey to finally get hold of a C3. It was like those forty years were gone and we picked up our friendship just where we left off, like we had never been apart. Rob , exactly the same , lovely gentle guy I remembered. Shortly after this Rob sold his vette to his son and went back to his hot rod days and bought a classic 70’s style custom Pop , complete with purple fur And leather interior , chrome chain link steering wheel , jag irs and rover V8. He had this for 2 and a bit years until his illness returned and progressed until unfortunately he was unable to drive it.
Rob leaves his wife Karen, son Brett and daughter Zayna.
Rob wanted his pop to go to a hot rodder who understands old one off customs, so if any one knows of someone looking for a well sorted pop then Myself or Rob Harrison could put them in touch with Brett. 🙏
