Side light bulb on UK spec C5

I'm trying to work out how to change a bulb on the nearside front side light on my 2001 C5. I've tried accessing it from the headlight aperature, but can't see how it's removed. My car has grilles covering the sidelight area and i'm not sure if these need removed or not. I had a look at my friend's C5 uk spec car to see how these lights are fitted, but even though his doesn't have grilles, I couldn't see how to remove the side light bulb. He said he has replaced the bulbs with led's, but he can't recall how he did it.
As I am shortly about to remove the front splitter on my car to repair it I may be able to access the sidelight from underneath. Possibly me bashing the front damaged the bulb.
Unfortunately I'm a bit incapacited just now with a bout of sciatica, so bending is difficult, so some advice would be appreciated.

The entire housing for the bulb clips inside that opening the grills are covering at the top. Bit hard to explain, but basically if the grill wasn't there you'd push the light back and it will unclip from the top lip of that opening. You can then just pull the bulb out. The clip is like a paperclip with the plastic edge of the opening going in-between it.

If you can't take the grills out, underneath the car at each corner of the front bumper is a panel you can remove to access the turn signal. You might be able to get your hand over to it from there (I can't remember as it's been a while since I had it off).

My friend Ian kindly took some pics of his UK spec sidelights for me, so I know what to look for. My back is still too painful to do anything yet, but I will get to it. Pics may be useful to other members though.
