One To Avoid In the Future

Took the C3 to the Festival of Fuel "Fueltopia " today at Ash Tree Farm , a new 33 acre event site near Market Harborough in Leicestershire . The site was ok but apart from a miniscule amount of interesting `real` classics and a just three Vettes , it was row after row of chav`s with hot hatches and sound systems with more power output than their engines ! There a few really well sorted and modified Japanese cars , the usual Skylines , Supra`s etc and some of the young guys were genuinely smitten and very interested in the C3 and chatted for ages . But there was so much crap it was untrue ! Like shabby 06 plate Vauxhalls with OTT spoilers bolted on , not to mention knackered old Mondeos as others of that ilk given the `Rat Motor ` treatment . Call me a snob but it really was a plebs day out ! The marshals were totally clueless , the PA system kept stuttering and the advertised " Live Music" was more painful than having teeth pulled . Here are the highlights. Oh ! and I found a steam loco !!! The day wasn`t a total right off . :D DSCF4007.JPGDSCF3982.JPGDSCF3984.JPGDSCF3992.JPGDSCF3985.JPGDSCF3987.JPGDSCF4005.JPGDSCF3998.JPGDSCF4008.JPG

I feel for ya ! I went to one near Wakefield a few years ago , 'Fuelled society'. Was like a supermarket car park. Where I live , well over 50 percent of passing traffic is shopping trolleys with fart-cannon exhaust. They all go as mental as their pathetic rides allow when passing the chippy at the roundabout at the top of my street, one of the lads working there has an imported Honda , of no note nor liklelyhood with a silly-daft spoiler on it, so they're 'out to impress'! Funny as hell , but someone was killed a few years back by this palaver.Sure, there's faster cars than 'Vettes, if you like what I consider drinking man's tat, but you'll go a long way , and spend a lot to beat 'em. And they sound proper, too. Suck that , leased Lambo drug-dealers !!!

The issue I find with car shows (and perhaps its just me) now is the seemingly essential need to book in advance on line.
So you pass all of your personal details over (like address, phone number, email and very specific car details etc) to a potentially unknown organisation or person and entrust them to abide by data projection laws.
You don't know how 'secure' their IT system is and who has access to it. Yes, they are legally obliged to comply with data protection laws - but who 'polices' that?
What concerns me is potential for people 'hacking-in' to the organisers IT system and 'farming' the attendee's personal details, and very specifically when you and others will be 'out of the house'. Paranoia? - perhaps........but we all too easily pass personal information over to third parties in a world that is increasingly being inhabited by scammers and data 'farmers'.
The importance of member data protection is 100% paramount to the CCCUK, the committee and club take member privacy extremely seriously indeed!
Having said all that, I do see the logic in organising a car event 'on-line' or via a third party app like Eventbrite or similar. I's a nightmare for event organisers unaware of how many visitors will turn up on the day - and that bad weather could create a financial disaster.

As you say Ross , booking in advance is now common place unfortunately . Organisers have used the Covid control of attendees to suite their own agendas now . All the local monthly events that were were free entry if displaying your car before Covid are now at least a £fiver in advance plus a booking fee which really pi**`s me off !

Event more irritating is the fact that 'your car' is part of the show. If no cars attend - there is no show. Having said that I guess it is reasonable to expect to pay a small figure in some cases to help the organiser 'balance' their books. The other thing that 'irritates' is organisers trying to 'lock-in' exhibitors at shows. So you you have perhaps a one or two hours trip to the show - you have to me 'on field' before perhaps 9:30 or 10 am and in some cases won't allow you to leave the show field before, say 5pm (unless marshalled by an organiser). Having said that......it must be quite frustrating for organisers to see cars leaving their event early and mid afternoon before the show finishes.

Ive never actually seen this being enforced though. I think organisers are duty bound to state this requirement as part of the events “risk assessment”.

I got invited to an invitation only charity car meet in Godmanchester this morning (first time thats happened, how very exclusive). The couple organising it have a Noble M400 and there was a line of no less than 13 Nobles there!.. not something you see everyday. There were two yellow Corvettes and two Mustangs but mostly it was 'Chavmobiles'. It occurs to me though that in the seventies/eighties very few of our generation owned a Yank or a Hot Rod.. most owned jacked up escorts, cortinas, vivas etc with silver painted steels on the front and Wolfrace/Grabbers on the back, shag pile interior, sidepipes if you could afford them and cruising lights & musical air horns... many of us (i wasnt so lucky) owned the Chavmobiles of the day and i remember as a 17 year old admiring the better ones. Now the Chavmobile is a hatchback with a music system that trys to vibrate the car into a pile of parts but theyre still just young petrolheads trying to impress the opposite sex... not that much has changed really.

Would be awesome to snort a big line of coke then go blasting down the motorway though.

Or how about this Escort (be careful doing an internet search )
with fake blower...
View attachment 13130
That was built by the recently 'passed' Al Llewelyn of A & L Auto's, based in North Street Romford. Basically a re-built Escort van c/w with its 1300 engine and the mock blower. A & L were one of of the better known paint and custom shops in the 70's and 80's specialising in Yanks and trick paintwork. Thier 'Dead City' Escort served them well as a general shop hack and mobile advertising board. Would you have driven around in something like this? (not me, for sure!)

At 17.. hell yes.. and i would have thought it was the dogs gonads.
Im struggling to find pics of genuine low budget customs from back in the day, theyre all higher end stuff so far, i guess nobody wants to scan and share photos of their budget efforts.. probably ashamed of them.
What i have found is a few present-day incredibly bad taste 70's style custom jobs which isnt really what im looking for.

We've spoken about this before I'm sure. Done (or certainty painted) by George Smith whilst at A & L Auto's. Back 'in the day' Romford was a bit of an epicentre for all things American, Hot Rod, and custom paint. Now.....its crap.....
