One of my favourites. The DeTomaso Pantera GTS. Powered by Fords 351ci Cleveland .
A friends cousin bought one new in 1974 I think. We all thought he was so cool.
Always loved the side graphics

How did it perform Andy - was it competitive?
No! It was a dnf in that first race, and qualified near the back of the grid too. It’s hard to find out much about it‘s onward life tbh, it was just a customer car. It might have done alright at the time with proper factory support/ development and a good driver.
Merlyn had a lot of success in Formula Ford. There are still plenty out there currently racing (and winning) in historic racing series.

The result sheet for that first Can Am race, won by a Brit in a British car (with a Chevy motor)….

As well as the few european designed cars that integrated american engines - usually V8's - into their initial design, there have over the years been quite a few individual cars that have had their original stock motors junked in favour of some good ol' yankee horsepower. This has been particularly prevalent among the classic british sports cars that found much favour in the States in the '40's, '50's and '60's.

One 1960's UK roadster had its original British 2.5 litre hemi V8 engine producing 140 HP......

(not this particular car, this one's mine)

....swapped for a Chevy all alloy 427 developing 540 HP.....

The original small V8 produced 155 lbf-ft of torque and can be quite a handful in the wet. Steve Sanett's Chevy motor produces 575 lbf-ft. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like on a damp day....:eek:

Seem to recall reading a old Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine (mnight still have it) of a Jaguar S type having its 'blown-up' 6 banger replaced with a SBC engine - seemingly it was quite a straightforward job and improved the car in all respects. We've seen Triumph TR's, Austin Frogeye Sprites, even Hillman Husky's with SBF's all featured in the US mags of the day.

The British built AC 428 / Frua was a direct competitor to the Grifo and powered by Ford 7 litre V8`s but I always thought the design shape was not as well resolved as the Grifo .AC428CPEFRTRIGHT.jpg

Tara king ( Linda Thorson) drove one in the Avengers. Don’t know what I liked more, the car or her. 😂

I had the same dilemma when Bullitt hit the silver screen . I couldn`t decided between the Mustang or Jacqueline Bissitt !! Having watched the movie many times since I now know it should have been JB .

Another continental stunner that ran with a US competitors V8 was the Chrysler 7 litre powered Swiss built Monteverdi`s . I remember seeing the mid engined 450 Hai in a magazine back in the day and being blown away by its looks ! Hai-GTS-101.jpg

She certainly was nice back then. I watched it the other night. Her little Porsche would have been peanuts back then in 1968, nobody wanted a 365.

Then of course there was “the deep” and JB in her white T shirt. the producer famously said “ that T-shirt made me a LOT of money.

Another 60`s / 70`s beauty was the Iso Lele that had a Chevrolet 327 from 1969 to 1972 when Iso went over to Ford Cleveland power . All the afformentioned cars bring back memories of the Earls Court Motor Shows of that era .Iso_Lele_(ca_1973)_at_Woburn.JPG
