Exciting day - rebuild of 78 coupe

Didn't get much done again today (apart from buying and sorting out a Xmas tree and going to a Xmas market with the wife). Did manage to replace the broken clips that hold the rear window trim and put the trim back on. Also put my first couple of bits inside the car.

Think I've got a problem with the passenger door glass though. No matter what I do with the adjusters, the top of the glass is about 20mm too far inboard. I can't actually shut the door with the window up and there's no weatherstrip there yet. Think I'll fit the driver's side and see if it's the same.

Have you got the anti rattle pads installed and adjusted correctly to push against inside inside face of the glass too keep window tight to weather seals at top of door panels ? Admittedly they only hold the bottom of window in place once up but would be worth checking . . My drivers side window sags in a bit at top of travel but not enough to be a real problem but of course that`s the side that gets all the use and wear on components . 20 mm is a lot though ! Good luck .
Don`t think I will be doing anything on mine this side of Christmas as the workshop is like a huge fridge when temps are around zero to only a few degrees C !!

Yes anti rattle pads pushing hard against the glass, but the glass is still around 5mm away from felt along the top of the door.
Nice and warm in my garage!

Maybe that`s your problem , it`s too hot and the doors have expanded ! :LOL:
All I have is a small electric heater to stand on top of to thaw out occasionally , the workshop is the size of the Principality Stadium with roof closed :(

John, I like the black rear screen surround with that blue - was the surround always all black, or have you painted it? I see that one of the bikes in the back ground has matching hash marks!

Re your engine no - on our UK registration it only showed the second part, 18-on.

But here, when we submitted the info for it to be classed as a "collection" vehicle, they needed all of it. And, when we had the insurance valuation done a couple of years ago, he wanted to see the engine, and trans numbers, and any others we could find, like carb, dissy etc etc.! Thankfully, everything matches up except the alternator, which is apparently a replacement.

Steve, the rear surround was not painted when I got it, but I think someone had removed the paint because there were odd traces of it left and the front surround was painted black. I hadn't noticed the hash marks on my bike, very observant of you! I'm about to ring the DVLA to find out how to get the engine number changed.

I only rent a bay in the place but plenty of space to work all around the car and have a work bench and storage shelves too . The unit is twice the length and over twice the width of what you can see in the photo which is why it is impossible to keep warm in winter ! However , it is a lot more crowded than when I took that photo three years ago as it`s home to five F2 cars , 2 prototype single seaters , a Spice Group C that won at Le Mans in 1987 , 2 full race Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cams ( one an ex Ford works car ) , 2 Lancia Delta Integale`s , 1 Honda Civic Type R race car , 1 BMW E36 Coupe FIA racer ( soon to be joined by an E46 Coupe Racer) , oh ! and a 1970`s Mini being rebuilt too . Don`t think I have missed anything 🤔

I need Chuffer’s workshop.

I need anyone's workshop, but I wouldn't know what to do in it!! My days of spanners and crawling under cars are long gone. More likely to use a workshop to install a pinball, coffee machine and armchair....................

I often think I should give up spannering for myself too Rich when I am crawling about over and under cars ! At least I sometimes get to the post lift that`s in the workshop if it`s free which makes life a lot easier :) . Oh ! and I forgot to mention the lathe and milling machine that in there too didn`t I ? :D

I've fitted the handle, lock and glass in the driver's door now, which has not helped a great deal. :( The front edge of the glass lines up nicely with the windscreen (there is about a 20mm gap all the way up) but the back edge starts off with a 20mm gap at the bottom but is hard against the fibreglass at the top. I can just about shut the door but it's putting a fair degree of load on the glass and I've got no weatherstrip there yet. Decided to just lower the glass for safety and get on with other things! Fitted my spare wheel carrier and wheel and also fitted the sill/rocker panels. Went to fit the new sill plate water diverters that I'd bought, but when I got them out of the bag they were in a right state, so had to give them a good polish first. Finally, I had a look where to mount the parking sensors and where to get the power from for them.
