1938 Buick Y-Job Concept

The creation of the industry’s first concept car was the work of Harley Earl and his organization now known as GM Design.
Built on a 1937 Buick chassis, Earl sought to combine his vision of the automobile with new technologies and features to create a benchmark for future designs.
Features like hidden headlights, flush door handles, a convertible top concealed by a metal deck and electrically operated windows all found their way into production cars. In 1939 the press reported the Y-Job was more than a concept car, it was the “Car of the Future”.

I watched vanishing point the other day. A friend had an identical car, but it had a green interior. He sold it in 1982 to get the then new shape Trans Am. As time went on, wished he’d kept it.

About 1984 we got a 70 or 71 challenger convertible in, plum crazy white top and interior 383 motor auto. I used it for a couple of weeks or so, that liked a drink, I do remember that. Was in two minds to keep it but didn’t. Oh well.

Old buddy of mine had a '72 Challenger 440 back in about '78.......legendary vehicle even then!
Picture this =me in my '68/69 Javelin 343 V8 totally flat out at an indicated 123 mph on the M11 en route to Santa Pod. Buddy with 440 Challenger pulls alongside - waves, floors it and simply (and albeit gradually) pulls away and continues to pull away for half a mile or more........great memory. In the Javelin's favour - it was surprising good on fuel - that trip from Romford to the Pod and back did something like 23 mpg (but not at 100 mph speeds for the whole journey)

A challenger or barracuda with the little 318/auto was a nice little car. Pretty good on gas and nice to drive. The 440 was a monster.
